Racing Hall of Fame member Cigar, whose 16-race win streak from 1994-96 included victories in the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) and Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), died at age 24 Oct. 7 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington.

Cigar, who died from complications following surgery for severe osteoarthritis in his neck, had resided at the Kentucky Horse Park Hall of Champions since 1999.

In all, the son of Palace Music—Solar Slew, by Seattle Slew, won 15 stakes including 11 grade/group I scores. Cigar earned Horse of the Year honors in 1995 and 1996, and was named champion older horse each of those years.

The second most famous Cigar of the 90’s.

Wasn’t really a big fan. Kept trying to beat him. Finally learned to stop betting against him. :-)

As a young kid I got to see (from the infield) Seattle Slew win the Derby. I actually ran into Howard Cosell (wearing a pink tuxedo) there. When we yelled “Howard” he said “How arrrrr yaaaaa”. So interesting to me that Cigar was a son of Seattle Slew. I don't really know how long horses live. Is 24 before his time, later than, or about the average for our equine friends?

Sometimes, one has to step back and laugh at oneself. The first two questions that popped into my mind on my first read of the lead paragraph: How could a 24 year old possibly have won races in the in 90’s? and Why would they include equine in the name of a hospital? — Then I realized I was confusing NASCAR with the Kentucky Derby.....LOL at me.....

‘Is 24 before his time, later than, or about the average for our equine friends?’

Exactly on the average.
