Was Nancy Pelosi there? I can’t imagine her missing such a big ordeal in her city.

I am glad to hear the parade was so family-friendly.

Willie Mays (the greatest baseball player who ever lived)..,

With all due respect, Willie is third, Maybe. Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle and then Willie Mays.

MadBum putting on a exhibition...again.

Wonder if he could be ready again by Wednesday? If it gets to game 7.

At this point I don’t think we’ll ever know.

Oh my goodness. As a kid, I spent an entire summer, hours a day, arguing with my neighbor, who was better, his Mantle, or my Mays. You’re not Mark D. from Beech St., perchance ;)

Mays lasted longer, but Mantle was better. You can argue, but you would be wrong. No, I have never been Mark from Beech St. My name is Dave.

You give me Mickey Mantle from 1953 to 1964. You can have anybody for as many years as you want. I will win AT LEAST five World Series. In twenty years, years, you won’t have three.

Mantle was my hero and I tried to pattern my swing in little league after his. He had a sweet swing and some how I thought it would work for me.

He was exceptionally fast in his younger years until he ruined his knee running for a fly ball and tripping over a sprinkler head. He was so fast he still holds the record for sprints to first base, both left handed as well as right handed.

I was truly enthralled with him and his play but was disappointed when I found out he was an addict to booze the almost the whole time he played and the press covered it mostly up.

Mantle, Maris, Yogi, Whitey, Bobby, what a team they were.

I had two Topps complete Yankees card sets from 59 and 60, man I chewed up alot of gum to get them. When we moved clear across the country in 1965 my Mom threw two boxes of baseball cards in the trash, my precious Yankees included.

Thanks Dave. As an old guy (56), I don’t have an entire summer to debate you, but your argument has merit:)

SIDE NOTE: I used to work at the Anaheim Theme Park, and had access to the arriving VIP schedules. One day, the schedule had Mantle arriving. I grabbed my pal, and said “Come on, The Mick is going to be here in 10 minutes”. “Who, Mick Jagger?”, he asked. “No idiot, Mickey Mantle”.

His limo was early, and we actually ran behind it for about 200 yards, until it reached the main gate. Imagine two guys in dress clothes, and wingtip shoes, in their mid 30’s, chasing a dream, as fast as they could run. To this day, it is one of the thrills of my life, seeing him, in person.

He died, about a year later.

No disrespect to either the great Babe Ruth or to Mantle (or to you), but Mays was better than both. I'll let it rest there - like faith, the greatest of all time is not a matter on which minds can be changed =).

I would take Mantle for ten years over Mays for twenty years. I mean NO disrespect to WIllie Mays. But Mantle was JUST THAT GOOD. We all have our opinions, but Mickey Mantle was a superlative talent. I won’t argue with you. But was is, is.

Saw Mantle play a number of times as the Yankees played the KC Athletics a lot. Stengal was a real trip.

I have mentioned before, the KC player from my era I loved to watch was Frank White. Sure there are better ball players but you sometimes get an appreciation for what one guy does in his career and for me that was Frank.

Baumgaaaaaartener is killing me.

Oh, good luck to your Royals, I am pulling for them, out of deference to my cousin, in MO.

Look up the Youtube story about the infamous “Pine tar” incident. Frank White’s commentary on the subject is most enjoyable. If you can’t find it, let me know, I’ll see if I can locate it. I know you will enjoy it.

My pal’s grandfather was buried in Forest Lawn. The entire length of the ceremony, his young nephew was turned away from the grave, fixated on something. After the service concluded, pal went up to scold his nephew. The youngster just pointed - it was Stengal’s grave.

Frank White. What a wonderful player. I have been a baseball fan for nearly fifty years. I could make a list of players that you may not have ever heard of, yet I have idolized. Don Mattingly, Mickey Rivers, Mike Heath, Elliot Maddox, Charlie Hough, Chris Chamblis. You don’t have to go to the Hall Of Fame to make an impression.
