Oh yes, that was horrible to see, on TV, can’t even imagine it, in person. Ironic, I always thought that Chapman would bring someone else down (not on purpose) with his heat, having him get blasted was something else.

Mantle was better, your stats proved nothing. Mantle was on better teams- YEAH - they were teams that had MICKEY MANTLE. More walks. No one wanted to pitch to Mickey Mantle. More strike outs. Mantle swung for the fences, so what? Defense. Mantle. Baserunning. Mantle. Three MVP’s. Mays WAS GREAT. Mantle was better.

Some random

Mantle suffered bad wheels and could have done more.

He was rested a day game. He had been out the night before and had a massive hangover.

In the ninth Stengel told him to pinch hit. 561 ft home run.

Mays could win a game with base running. Got fielders to throw behind him with fakes. In the outfield, I give the edge to mays, maybe due to mantle injuries in later years.

Both great fun t o watch.

Defense? 12 Gold Gloves for Mays. 1 for Mantle. Mays was the all around greatest player the game has seen....

Do you have sb stats? I’m guessing mays my wide margin. However mantle probably higher slugging percentage.

338 Stolen Bases for Mays. 153 for Mantle. Both had career 557% Slugging Averages....

All around Mays was a better player....

Also, Mays lost most of 1952 and all of 1953 to military service. Probably cost him 50-60 home runs and the chance to break Ruth’s HR record before Aaron did....

Mantle better than Mays? What’re you drinking?

Heh, gotta think of that song by Kongos,

I'm only jokin'
I don't believe a thing I said.
Whaddaya smokin'?
I'm just a' f***in' with your head.

As a kid in the fifties in New Jersey, Mantle was the god of baseball, like Hercules or something. That was the only thing I knew about baseball, Mickey Mantle, Mickey Mantle, Mickey Mantle, ... and the Yankees.

Only a little crazy thing I read ...

Mantle was damn good. Greatest hitter of the era? Ted Williams. Greatest all around player? Willie Mays. Greatest switch hitter of all time? Mantle....

That is very cool, Contrarian. Giants and MadBum fan here. A gentleman called into the postgame show tonight, saying he sat behind MadBum’s dad. His dad only said who he was when asked, and when the game was over, he had tears in his eyes.

The caller also alluded to a moment of great and humble character when MadBum was in a restaurant (that I think he saw for himself), and he helped out some needy people. Quietly. Without cameras or reporters. Just to help.

You have a good friend.

Based on the military service he clearly would have added significantly to his stats

Yes, Mays would have added to his numbers, but you never know what would've happened. Maybe he would've tripped over a sprinkler head in the outfield (like Mantle did) or gotten in a car accident like what just happened to that young great talent Oscar Tavares. In reality, May's career without those additional years is more than enough for baseball fans like me to marvel at his brilliance...!

I judge the military years the same for Ted Williams as I do Mays.

Most of the greats did not have significant career ending injuries well before their time.

Mantle seems to have retained his power. IIRC when he came up he had great speed and perhaps he suffered with fewer extra base hits and SBs

Cool. He seems like a good guy from the interviews I’ve seen.
