I went to see it last week. They tell me it’s going to be over soon.
I thought the extended versions of The Lord of the Rings were good, they included scenes from the book, but it seemed to me, the Extended version of The Hobbit included Jackson’s own scenes. Does this one add from the book?
Throughout the movie, Thorin is portrayed as being a bit un-hinged, and the belief that his father still lives is part of that portrayal; but, this piece of the movie, Thrain alive at Dol Gul Dor, shows that Thorin, may in fact, be sensing that his father still lives.
Most of the extra stuff is just dialogue that was cut out and is now back into the film; but, the segment with Thrain is long enough that it makes a difference in the film. IMHO
My 18 year old son just finished the Hobbit book and is starting the Lord of the Rings. He decided to put off the third book of the Game of Thrones.
He is loving the whole Tolkien series. What an inspirational set of books and as I told him, very RICH in detail and thought.
I am a nerd, though. My first video games were Moria and Adventure.
Tolkien was brilliant.
Interesting that the Hobbit is only one, regular length, book (300 pages?)... that was made into three full length movies.
I’d be interested if Jackson REMOVED an hour of footage from the movie instead of ADDING more. Then it would be much more faithful to the novel. He is padding the trilogy way too much and a two hour Desolation of Smaug would be a far more enjoyable movie. The theatrical version dragged.
Yes, Jackson and Co. made 3 movies from one book. It’s not so hard to understand when you can interpret the heavenly music of the Ainur. That holy music makes this sound, “Cha-Ching!” It worshiped amongst the lower men of Hollywood.
My son was giving me daily updates while reading the book. So we already know how the third movie is going to end. But it will be a good father/son activity when the movie is released in a couple of weeks. We can critique the movie together.
Then again, I loved all five soon to be six moves. We plan a movie marathon over Christmas — lets see approx. 3 hours per movie x 5 = 15 hours.
The Hobbit was the first book I ever read just for fun.
I went to high school only opening a book when I had to. I was amazed at how much I enjoyed it, and spent the next couple of years reading everything I had ever hear of but never read.
If not for Tolkien I would never be where I am today (college, engineer, highly paid computer god)
Jackson added a lot of material from the Appendices of the LotR books. Tolkein had put a lot of the back story and connecting stories (relating the events of “The Hobbit” to the plot of “The Lord of the Rings”)into the appendix.
My son was telling me about the prologue. He was pretty excited since he had just read the Hobbit. He is just now getting to the first chapter.

Watched this last night with the Mrs. Very fun. Much new stuff. Was nearly like watching it for the first time.
