Damn, it is nasty out-I decided to drive the 8 miles to the general store because I was out of coffee and yogurt for breakfast-as soon as I came to the first of the several steep hills and creek bridges on this one-lane sort-of-paved road I switched to 4WD-there was ice on the bridge-so I drove all the way to the store and all the way back in 4WD in the partly freezing drizzle and mist.

It was not this bad when I went to check that jobsite this morning, and it was just as cold as it now, but the drizzle wasn’t sticking to bridges and hills-and this is only the second time I have felt the need to use the 4WD in the 4Runner, but I’m really glad to have it when it is needed...

Second time ever?

That’s the nice thing about modern all wheel drive systems — they have automatic modes of operation. You usually can engage them if you want, but they will engage if needed without intervention.

Of course, they won’t go very far in true off-road situations. Or tow very much weight.

It’s nice here now. Tomorrow morning the rain comes, possible sleet, etc. when it starts. By game time tomorrow 50 degrees, rain and 25 mph gusts.

Second time with this 4x4-I used the 4WD in my old Blazer many times over the years. I prefer to use 4WD when I think it makes sense-not when the vehicle computer does-one of the many reasons I drive older vehicles even at the rare times when I can afford a newer one...

I have a trailer hitch on this 4x4 and I have used it-and off-road situations are always possible out here-all it takes to make one is having that creek crossing be flooded or have a bit more ice on it, and it is around and overland to get to the main farm road-the only way out of here...

If there’s a sudden loss of traction (black ice, gravel, etc) you can never respond in time to switch into 4WD.

AWD, traction control, ABS, etc. are safety systems.

My 4x4 has ABS-I think all vehicles did after 1980something-and like today, even the hint of ice or other frozen stuff, or a wet hill is reason enough for me to go to 4WD, as is the combination of a grade and gravel. But people who don’t deal with that stuff often-or live where you need a 4x4 to be safe driving-are not going to notice anything out of the ordinary anyway.

Well, to be honest a walk thru the close spots in any parking lot of any grocery store...proves being black is a handicap in Amerika.

That was an ALL post.

Everyone needs to watch The Soup.

Not just those stirring it.

Because Dave said it was funny, I did try watching The Soup on E last night-for less than 15 minutes, because it made my teeth itch with the idiocy-if this is what amuses the Roman mob, we are in real trouble...

I watched the novela Senora Acero on Telemundo instead-the main heroine is a female money launderer/narco-a bigtime mafioso/narco trafficker she works for is totally obsessed with her, but she does not return his affection, preferring an undercover drug enforcement officer as her amante. Graphic sex, overdone dialog with lots of vulgarity and the body count rises with every episode, but it is more engaging than The Soup was...

There is a similar show on Telemundo called Suelta La Sopa-I’ve never watched that one, either...

Jabbing what amuses the mob, and doing so with pith, is what makes the show endearing.

They use the object of our ire, for their own ends...

They should have have a spin off called...

1600 Penn... WTF Happened.

A WH spokesman named .. Earnest...

a FAB making school lunch policy while their kids school serves a Waldorf Astoria menu

We do all that right here at FR, and everyone gets to participate-I like that much better...

You ought to check out Senora Acero-next week is the last of the first season-if you like Sons of Anarchy, you might like it.

Yes, pop culture is horrifying.

I don’t see it changing, so we might as well have fun with it.

That’s the Soup. They watch the idiots so we don’t have to. Then give us only the best of the stupidity.

I stayed home from mass as it was icy outside. DH went, but I didn’t feel safe.

I did, too-it wasn’t cold enough for ice, but I don’t feel safe driving a high profile 4x4 18 miles on hills with steep ravines on each side in wind gusts of 35-40mph-so I lighted candles and incense and prayed my rosary right here.

We are having sub priests while ours recovers from his bypass surgery. I like hearing different sermons. He actually referenced Talladega Nights while talking about the baby Jesus today, which cracked us all up. And his point was Jesus is the reason, but it doesn't stop after Christmas.
Now back to cheering on our Cowboys, who are trying to implode.

I went to another church for noon mass today. It was 40° today. Snow is all gone already.

I got to hear a different priest, too. His homily was similar to Msgr. Pope’ s.
