Iran has unveiled the 'second generation' of its indigenously developed Saeghe (Thunderbolt) combat aircraft, state media announced on 9 February.

The Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces Logistics agency announced the unveiling of the Saeghe-2 jet, and its delivery to the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF), the Mehr news agency reported.

While the original Saeghe was based on the single-seat Northrop F-5E Tiger II fighter, the Saeghe-2 is modelled on the twin-seat F-5F operational trainer. On the surface, the Saeghe-2 bears the same twin-tail modification as the Saeghe, although it is not possible to ascertain what internal improvements may have been made to either model.

I think they had plenty of F-4s and some Tomcats....IIRC the F-5 (T-38 civilian) is/was the trainer for Air Force Academy.

“If Iran is going for knockoffs now about a Phantom or Tomcat one?”

Without access to appropriate jet engines, the airframes are useless. The Iranians have access to jet engines for the F-5 airframes.

The F-5 is what a 40 year old design?

Where are they getting the engines? Don’t tell me the engines are designed and made in Iran.

Well, it is still an achievement if they built it from the ground up instead of kitbashing it from an F-5F.

Somehow, though, I think that is exactly what they did, in which case, big deal.

If they want to do something impressive, they should design and build a brand new jet airliner. It would be the first jet airliner every designed and built in the Moslem world.

Thats definitely a T38 not an F5. That twin tail must be for stealth and good for 50k lbs of indirect thrust. They must have a top secret air intake system in case a squirrel or a walnut blocks the air intakes.

Oh contraire! Lest you forget the Persians had jumbo Magic Carpet rides while us infidels were just crawling out of our caves.

The things the Iranians/muslims do better than anyone else is kill other muslims, talk big and ignore reality.

Therein lies the rub. I am certain China, Russia, and even some of our so called Muslim allies are glad to sell the Mullah's the technology.

China and Russia can make jet engines but durability and fuel usage are a problem, especially with Chinese designs.

Whether knock-off or genuine improved tactical threat, I have to remember we’re talking about Jihadi-Iran. Put a true-believing Shi’a pilot in the chair and you’ve a longer-range atomic weapon with potential high accuracy.

They have the F4. They used them over Iraq a few weeks ago. I loved the F4. It was all the rage when I was 11. Along with the FB-111 when I was in college.
