Automotive technology ping!....................
A couple years ago I saw a Rapid Prototype Device spit out a working adjustable wrench. This is whole level higher.
“Most incredibly, Harrell tells us that it could absolutely be used in a real vehicle, since it is a scaled down version of the real thing. “
When this happens I’m opening a transmission repair shop. I’ll make a fortune replacing all of those transmissions.
I printed it and installed it in my toyota but as soon as I dropped the clutch my car didn’t move and I smelled burnt plastic.....
(sarc)
Very pretty plastic parts. Would work well for a the Tonka version.
I think he really means that a working unit made of metal would be feasible and economical to manufacture. It’s coming..................
Pretty soon we will see complete drive trains 3D printed, engine and all................................
Oh, it’s plastic.....
my son just killed his jeep engine and is now getting a ram truck. wish he could make one and save a LOT of money instead of going into debt.
Very cool.
And already is being done. Sintered metal printers for additive manufacturing are quite common.
The problem is the print time. At the moment, only low rate production can be supported by printers because of that - which is perfect for highly complex items, in high valued added parts, but not hyper mass production like Toyota gearboxes.
But we will get there. And the world will be better, because then high complexity will be affordable.
Ain't capitalism grand?!
Good luck with that.
I am looking to buy a jeep engine and get a long time inactive set of wheels operating again. Parts and labor will be bad enough but the price of new stuff is outrageous.
It will be a light duty summer ride mostly and to keep from racking up too many miles on 2012.
If you are manufacturing bootleg parts and engines, aren’t you violating Toyota (or whoever the part manufacturer is)’s patents?
Wouldn’t it be much cheaper to buy a crate engine?..................
Very pretty plastic parts. Would work well for a the Tonka version.
I agree... Good point..
I did the V-8 like that and the Wankel rotary. I even had the little lights for the spark plugs working on both.
Fun times. I wonder what happened to them...
Yes, this is just an experiment. It could revolutionize the manufacturing industry. Paper to finished part in record time................
