Celebrating soccer team scored on by opponents [Darwin Award Alert]

Pretty safe to say the Macedonian under-16 boys soccer team doesn’t enjoy a ton of success internationally.

So you could see why their goal celebration during a UEFA Development Tournament match against host Gibraltar was a little over-the-top. And, it should be said, incredibly costly.

The Macedonian team scored what it thought was the winning goal in stoppage time against Gibraltar on Wednesday. But as they were celebrating the goal — the entire team headed to the sideline to whoop it up with their bench — the enterprising Gibraltar players put the ball back in play.

Before the Macedonian team could react, a Gibraltar player dribbled the length of the field and scored into the open net. The goal was ruled legal because the Macedonians were all inside their half.

The unexpected tally tied it 1-1 and gave Gibraltar the tournament win on goal differential.

It’s a tough way for the Macedonians to learn a very important lesson — wait until after the game is over to really cut loose — but they weren’t the first team to get burned by over-celebrating.

A week ago a similar situation occurred during a game between Mozambique’s Ferroviario Maputo and Zambia’s K-Stars in the 2015 Future Champions Gauteng International Tournament. When Ferroviario scored to take a late lead, Kapilingo Francisco of the K-Stars took advantage of a wayward keeper, who was celebrating with his teammates, to score the tying goal.

When my girl’s team would score they would all run to the center of the field, lay their hands in a circle and shout “Go Starzs!”, then quickly line up for the ball. Our defense and keeper had as much to do with the goal as the kid that scored it.

Youtube has entire collections of premature celebration. Some are quite funny.

This is not a Darwin Award situation. Somebody has to die in a stupid way for that award. This is just a Dunce Award situation. Like a football player spiking the ball at the ten yard line.

What’s the hardest part of playing soccer? - having to tell your parents that you’re gay.

Apparently the Macedonian team wasn’t led by either Phillip or Alexander. The Gibraltar team probably was led by either Wellington or Nelson.

So Youtube has an entire collection of premature celebrations. Does this include one of Bill Clinton and ML?

Just a joke. I played rugby for 20 years so by law I’m allowed to make fun of soccer players.
