Windows 10 bombshell: Microsoft to KILL OFF Patch Tuesday
The Register ^ | May 4, 2015 | Iain Thomson

New policy verges on apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade

Ignite 2015

Microsoft has shown off some of the new security mechanisms embedded in Windows 10, and revealed a change to its software updates.

Windows supremo Terry Myerson reckons the revised security patch rollout – effectively ditching the monthly Patch Tuesday – will shame Google.

"Google takes no responsibility to update customer devices, and refuses to take responsibility to update their devices, leaving end users and businesses increasingly exposed every day they use an Android device," Myerson said during his Ignite keynote in Chicago today. He was referring to the sometimes tardy rollout of operating system updates for Android gadgets.

"Google ships a big pile of [pause for effect] code, with no commitment to update your device," he added to chuckles from the audience.

Myerson promised that with the new version of Windows, Microsoft will release security updates to PCs, tablets and phones 24/7, as well as pushing other software "innovations," effectively putting an end to the need for a Patch Tuesday once a month.

Windows 10 enterprise customers will stay on the monthly update cycle, which will be reworked as Windows Update for Business: this will allow IT managers to pick and choose updates to deploy, and set when they will be automatically installed.

Meyerson said home users will get patches first, which will allow businesses to hold off and see what breaks before installing – bug patches have bugs from time to time, after all.

How the heck did I miss this yesterday!?!?

This is pretty major, folks.... I think what they're saying is "home" (non-enterprise) Windows users will get "pushed" updates in a more or less continuous stream throughout the month.

I gotta think about how I feel about that... it's gonna depend on whether I can turn that stream on and off at MY will, not Microsoft's. And whether they'll honor that setting -- or not -- when they feel like it.

"...The goal, he said, was to make users of all stripes more secure by constantly feeding updates down the pipe, across all devices once Windows 10 is launched..."
Hmmmm.

I think this one re-defines the phrases "tin ear" and "tone-deaf" when it comes to "what do my customers want?".

The last thing I want is my computer updating itself outside my control.

And as for those promised "other software innovations", well, I've seen "innovations" that made my hair curl. It was not a pretty sight.

I made sure everything I wanted to work works.

Then I shut off all automajik updates.

Not just on windoze, but on all OSs I run.

If it works, why update it?

I watch the network to make sure I don't need any security updates. And I generally don't.

It ain't broke. I ain't fixing it.

I've got five Windows 7 computers at home and they all get patched every month.

It's only fatiguing if you don't keep up, otherwise it's just an excuse to have a beer or two and read a book for a change.

That doesn’t sound like a bad idea

I’m thinking that they need to come up with a way to have the OS on a different hdd totally than everything else. Make it as hard for hackers and malware to mess up as possible

As someone who depended on junked computers for many years, I always had to first clear them of all the spyware and viruses, and then catch up on all the Windows updates.

I have always just set updates on automatic and let them take care of their own OS.

OBTW, I enjoyed your photo the other day of your home power system.

I've been off the grid since 1989 up here in upstate NY. Got a dozen Solarex MX60 panels, about 1200 Amp-hours of 24VDC Rolls batteries, a Trace 4000W inverter, and a pair of Trace C40 charge controllers (like yours), one for the PVs and one for my wind machine, an old 1940's Jacobs 2.6KW DC genny that's presently offline for repair.

Warms my heart to see another off-gridder! :-)

No Patch Tuesday? Wait, what about the ceremonies? The sacrifices? Dang it, what about the chicken bones? I can’t be a sysadmin without the chicken bones!

You're a braver man than I am, Gunga Din.

I would have re-installed the OS from scratch after a deep format. I guess I don't trust used gear unless I've scraped it down first.

You'll just have to settle for the smoking entrails of the folks who offed themselves trying to make sense of the Windows 8 Metro GUI.

Just kidding.

No I'm not. :)

From what that other recent thread had with 10 being nothing more than a gussied up Win 8, no way am I letting it near my Win 7 machine or my wife's 8.1.

Though I may use her's as a sacrificial lamb, as all she does is internet foolishness.

She can always use my old reliable XP laptop if she has to.
