Yogi Berra at 90: Quips and quotes from a Yankees icon
USA Today | May 12, 2015 | Josh Peter

Posted on 05/12/2015 3:03:32 PM PDT by TBP

Happy 90th birthday to the great Yogi Berra, Hall of Famer player, coach, and manager, wit and occasional philosopher.

Unfortunately, since USA Today is Gannett, link only.

Doesn't mean I can't comment.

Major League Baseball is doing a classy thing for Yogi's 90th -- replacing the World Series rings and MVP trophies that were stolen in October. Classy touch, MLB!

Saw Yogi play in person at Yankee Stadium many years ago, along with Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford.

Yogi Berra is still with us! You can put that in your pipe and take it to the bank!

Happy Birthday Yogi,
My favorite Yogi story:

Aug. 20, 1964. The Yankees had just lost, 5-0, and swept in a four-game series by the Chicago White Sox, The team bus was delayed taking off for O’Hare Airport, so Linz pulled out his new harmonica and he took out the “learn by the numbers,’’ pamphlet, and started playing.

Berra, in his first year as manager, turned around from the front seat and yelled toward the back of the bus: “Shove that harmonica up your...”

“I wasn't sure what he said,’’ Linz said. “So I turned to Mickey Mantle, and asked, “What did he say, Mickey?’

“Mickey told me, “Play it louder.’’’

I had the privilege as a tot of sitting in his lap in a FL restaurant. I was known to wander and socialize after I was finished eating. ;) I still remember it, too.

When I played Little League ball back in the 1950s, we called our catcher, “Yogi”. Lot of respect even when he was a young player. We loved Yogi. Hated the Yankees but loved Yogi.

At which point, Yogi slapped the harmonica out of Linz’s hand.

The Yankees went on to win the pennant. M<any say that was the turning point.

Mickey was my favorite, but Yogi was probably right nest to him. Yogi was also the best clutch hitter I ever saw. If the game is on the line, the guy I want up to bat is Yogi Berra.

“You only get so many hits a year, so I’m saving them.”

Boy, did he!

I can still do Bob Sheppard announcing the lineup for the great 1961 Yankees.

As a kid I had 3 of his baseball cards but traded two away for players I believe Harmon Killebrew, Warren Spahn. My mother got rid of all my cards when I outgrew them. They’d be worth a mint today. Mothers sometimes just don’t understand ‘investing’ :)

I saw Yogi hit one over the right field fence at Yankee Stadium when I was nine years old. It was a one-time and memorable visit to New York City. The Orioles beat the Yanks 2 to 1.

Yogi arriving home after a game: “So what didja do today?” Wife Carmen: “I went to see Dr. Zhivago!” Yogi: “What the hell is wrong with ya now?!”

You traded duplicates of a Hall of Famer for two other Hall of Famers.

“The future ain’t what it used to be.”

“If the world were perfect, it wouldn’t be.”

On his marriage to Carmen: “We have a good time together, even when we’re not together.” (Doesn’t that sound sweet?)
