I’m a very late boomer and it hits close enough my experience. Not a Garanimal wearer, but remember them. My mother insisted on shoes other than on our lawn, but some others didn’t. Definitely played in creeks filled with snakes and turtles and climbed trees. Used to capture and name frogs, toads, etc.

Baby Boomers didn’t pay attention to their kids? What are you talking about? They are the ones who were raised free range, but then started overprotecting their own kids.

No—you’re just missing the difference between urban and suburban or rural upbringings.

I’m Gen X and for to many of us (who would probably not be posting on FR) this story is dead on.

I prefer putting parenting back to parents and not providing generations with labels attributing success or failure of liberal policies.

My generation has no label; I am fortunate.

"...Sorry, this is unnecessary and tiresome......"

It is purposely done to be divisive. The goal is to divide us into squabbling groups.

It is a leftist tactic.

My brother was born in 87. We don’t talk politics much but he occasionally says some things that sound vaguely conservative.

“Rock fights?”

Oh yeah. With some kids who wanted to claim our half-built tree house. Few bruises, nothing critical. It was the olden days. The Nanny State and lawlessness didn’t have us housebound and internet addicted! : )

Xer Ping

Ping list for the discussion of the politics and social (and sometimes nostalgic) aspects that directly effects Generation Reagan / Generation-X (Those born from 1965-1981) including all the spending previous generations are doing that Gen-X and Y will end up paying for.

This article is only part right.

I do agree that Gen Xers raised their Millenial kids like "helicopter parents", which has its own set of issues.

All I know is if the laws of today existed when I was a kid, both of my parents would have 200 consecutive life sentences and would have been executed at least 30 or 40 times by now.

Lol. No kidding, my father would be incarcerated still to this day.

We stopped the rock fights after dad wore out a leather belt on us 3 older boys. We graduated to Bob/pellet gun wars.

I think dad figured if the Zombie apacolipse or Commie invasion ever happened we were well versed in warfare. We also made our own hand grenades with smokeless and black powder. He suspected something when he found cut
Up shotgun shells and half empty black powder kegs.

I’m a member of the “silent” generation, that’s why you never hear a peep out of me.

Yes, they have been robbed, they reach their teens without ever learning to harness a mule or plow with one, chop wood with an ax, pull their end of a six foot crosscut saw, hoe cotton, pick cotton, dig potatoes, feed pigs, chickens, cows and mules. They don’t know how to dam the branch with a shovel, catch crawfish or fireflies, pick wild blackberries or blueberries or wild plums or grapes, they have never walked three miles in a day, let alone the thirty that we used to walk. They really are deprived. They know all about smart phones though.

“A kid today CANNOT have our childhoods. It’s illegal.”

It would certainly be illegal if he had mine! I can assure anyone that if you allow your children to do what my parents EXPECTED AND DEMANDED that I do they will be taken from you. You will be charged with abuse and reckless endangerment. Of course my parents only demanded it because that and more had been demanded of them when they were children.

Almost all of the things the author is whining about was the result of unfettered liberalism and was in full force before Gen-X started having kids.

I disagree, this isn’t a Gen-X thing but a liberalism thing, and generally Gen-X is less liberal than Boomers and Gen-Y. I don’t doubt there are some crazy Gen-X parents, but a good portion of us are new grandparents.
