I’m not at the point I need to have the latest and greatest of anything anymore.

PLus I like having O/S’s that are not continually checking and wasting resources to determine if my licensing is up to snuff everytime I use an app or just periodically checking. To me that’s like the damn cops plate checking everybody.

[ I switch between multiple versions of Windows and Windows NT on a regular basis—I’m typing this on the Windows 3.1 computer I use to test my Win32 universal apps. ]

do you use Virtual Box or some linux KVM?

Nope—I have an old HP Prolinea 486DX4-66. I can’t use VirtualBox reliably on any current Windows NT—I use Virtual PC on Windows Vista instead.

I DO have a Windows 3.1 inside the hyper-visor; it is used to write 16-bit apps that I then test on actual hardware—using the Visual C++ profiler.

It was either that, or an older version of the same, on Windows 2000—I hold a System Builder licence for Windows 2000 and Windows 98, and two regular licences for Windows Vista, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1. I also have a full Windows 3.1 disk set. (Disk 4 is slowly rotting away—data loss becomes worse as you get to the centre of the disk)

I threw out my lone licence for Windows XP—it was tied to an old laptop that physically broke—I picked it apart, and recycled the rest. OEM licences are non-transferrable, of course.

Why are they telling me that my graphics are inadequate?

Who is they? But most likely it’s because it won’t run all the features of the new os like transparent rules or something is my guess.

Verdict is out on Microsoft’s new browser, Spartan. Long gone are the days where Internet Explorer carries the weight of insecurity. From what I’ve seen, Spartan is a fast browser and works on par with Firefox for usability. Microsoft is doing a lot of things right with Win10.

They’d do better if the changed “Bing” to “Bling”.

The codename was Spartan. I’ve not been keeping up with Redmond.

That's a good guess, for-q.

Ansel12 -- Right-click "Computer" (or "This PC" or whatever the "My Computer" icon is on your system), select "Properties", and run the "Experience" tests that evaluate the various parts of your machine. It includes a score for the graphics adapter. It might just be that it's down around 2.5 instead of say 6.0 (out of 7.9), and like for-q says, it might not run the fancy graphics effects.

FWIW, I turn those fancy effects off. They bore me and only suck CPU and graphics power for no net good unless you're gaming, or maybe running sports videos.

Which btw this doesn’t make sense:

“They bore me and only suck CPU and graphics power for no net good unless you’re gaming, or maybe running sports videos.”

In fact, turning them off can help gaming because it frees up cycles for your GPU to process in game graphics and not fancy OS overlays (like transparent UI). What you said is pretty much the opposite of reality—at least within windows.

I’m not a fan of Edge/Spartan right now. It doesn’t have a full screen mode and it hangs quite a bit right now—but that might be windows 10 because Chrome hangs too. Of course I don’t like Chrome either—it’s a resource hog.

“They” was clicking on my download Win 10 symbol in the tray, and following that through.

On second look, you're right; I was in a hurry and clearly must have screwed up editing.

What I meant was supposed to be: “They bore me and only suck CPU and graphics power for no net good, especially when unless you’re gaming, and or maybe running sports videos.”

Thanks for the correction.

> It’s not a guess ;-)

I used your word ("...like transparent rules or something is my guess") but I was just teasing anyway. :-)

Huh, those aren't bad scores at all. That's a very decent machine.

Makes me wonder what "they" meant... I guess it's time to make Google our friend (or whatever your favorite SE is) and see if others have seen the same thing and figured it out.
