American sprinter Trayvon Bromell, a 19-year-old who goes to Baylor, had a historic weekend at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships. In the prelims he ran the 100 meters in 9.84 seconds. It's the fastest time ever for a teenager and ties for the 2nd-fastest time of 2015. At age 19 Bromell is the 10th-fastest man of all time, and the 4th-fastest American. He went on to finish second to Tyson Gay in the 100m finals at the US Championships, which earned him a spot on the US team at the World Championships in Beijing in August.
"I started slowing down, I didn't want to run too fast and wear myself out," he said after his historic performance. "I'm really surprised. When I slowed it down I didn't think I was going to run that fast. Man it's crazy. I didn't try to run that fast in prelims."
Any American posting these sorts of times would be the talk of the track world, but what makes Bromell's story so special is his age. Historically, sprinters peak in their 20s. Alistair Tweedale of the Telegraph dug into the numbers and found that the five fastest active sprinters Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell, Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, Yohan Blake only Blake broke 10 seconds before age 20.
Bromell is the first US teenager to ever qualify for the worlds in the 100m.

He broke his hip in 10th grade and can still run like this. Beyond amazing.
Good story. I hope he does well. (But I am not buying it that he slowed down so as not to tire himself out.)
Good for him. Maybe this young man will make the name ‘Trayvon’ stand for something positive. This Trayvon must have a lot of inner drive and discipline, because to look at him, he doesn’t have long legs and narrow torso, the usual build of a long distance runner.
The bottom photo doesn’t leave much to the imagination.
Did you mean sprinter? He is not a distance runner. A key physical trait for a good sprinter is that it is longer from the knee to the ankle than from the hip to the knee.
I would love to see him run!
That's about 33 feet per second. I'm trying to wrap my mind around that.
Would like to see born and raised American runners make a splash again.
Its been awhile since that has happened.
I almost stepped on a skunk one time. And he had his tail turned towards me. I believed I exceed 33 feet per second in removing myself from the skunk's presence.
Whoa, now that's stinky fast!
As a high school sophomore I unofficially tied the school record for the 100 yard dash set by my father at 10.3 seconds. This guy would have beat me by 10+ yards!
Now if we could just train the skunk to chase you
you might be the next record holder in the 100m.
Not trying to be contrarian, however it is possible that PEDs played a role given the can be prescribed under certain injury circumstances. Or, it is possible that has his body overcompensated with “boy steroids” because of the major injury. Regardless, it is an amazing feat!
Thought Tyson Gay had been banned for use of a banned substance?
Usain Bolt’s record is 9.58 seconds. See here:
Trayvonn is very good at 9.84 secs. But he has ways to go to overtake that record.
There is another person in the world named Trayvon?
I was a lot younger when that event occurred. Now, in my sixties I’m not as fast. I’m afraid Usain Bolt could beat me by a tenth of a second. I might be lying about that last statement.
.26 seconds doesn’t sound like much unless your working to get your time down. Then it’s an eternity.
