The Fifth Dimension “Bill”

I wanna marry you Bill.

Marilyn McCoo sang that about Billy Davis Junior. They are still married.

Tutti Frutti circa 1955 was not about bubble gum.

Awww, he’s a Southerner. The whole band has it down. He’s not *quite* Otis Redding but he’s close. (lol Now, I have to listen to Otis Redding. Now.) There’s a twinge of James Brown there, too.
It’s so fantastic that these artists are young. I’ve felt sorry for this generation so many times because they missed out.

How are you finding these, Osage? Just surfing you tube or NPR tiny music?
More good stuff.

I stumbled upon Tiny Desk....after listening to the Avett Brothers.

Hozier has a radio playing song....but he's much better than that....

Here listen to the two songs after...

An Irishman....

Wow. You have *excellent* taste in music. (lol I think you’re about to spend all my disposable income for next month.) I love this, too.

I haven’t listened to music on the radio in decades. Well, there was a jazz station on the way back from Houston about a year ago that had some really, really good stuff I’d never heard before. It would be worth a trip just to try & find it again, but will be a long time before I can do that mid-week (which is when it was) again.

Funny story....

I bought a sailboat from a guy in So.Illinois...went thru Missouri to get there....Came across the best FM rock station...Played a lot of off beat, off regular FM station stuff, Played jazz too. Loved it!!

Wish I would have saved that station....

Got a bit lost coming back...and ended up traveling a great road...with some great small towns in between.

Sometimes lost is good.........

To be fair, there’s some pretty negative “white” popular music too

To be fair, compare the pervasiveness and the popularity of negative white music among whites and blacks... with the pervasiveness and popularity of negative black music among whites and blacks.

A few decades ago, however, black popular music—what’s come to be known as “classic soul”—was notable for featuring lyrics that celebrated marriage

The main reasons popular male artists used to glorify marriage in songs are:

1. They figured that is what women wanted to hear.
2. They couldn't get away with explicitly glorifying sex.

The idea that Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, or James Brown didn't have sexually suggestive lyrics is ridiculous.

It’s great when things like that happen. I have always wished we had the time to have a “lost” vacation & just meander for a week or so.

Wedding Bell Blues was originally recorded by Laura Nyro three years before the Fifth Dimension waxed it. It was a big hit in Southern California in November and December of 1966, but apparently no where else. The Fifth Dimension's version was a hit nationwide.
