Another late night/early morning whimsical post concerning music and a memorable TV commercial. Here's the link to the 1960's Red Rose song, very catchy.

Although the Canadian-based tea company ran it elsewhere, it's ascent to a cult classic
may be just a western Pennsylvania thing along with Chiller Theater, Who Can? Ameri-CAN, red up your room and meet me under Kaufmann's clock. Anyone else old enough to remember this?

What part of the country were you in when you saw it? It was a pretty big deal in the tri-state (PA, OH and WV) in the 60’s...a commercial that became a regional hit.

A tiny (then) little bedroom town, 13 miles east of Boston Mass, Natick.
(btw, we cross posted)
Can’t find the good/original ‘strong’ tea that I remember (but the silly plaster cracker jack animals are still included)
Don’t know how big a deal this commercial was, as said on another thread, at that time, New England had Ernie Boch and New England Speedway.

Have you seen b/m this site?

Got it from another thread... some good stuff

West Mifflin, near the slag heap, for me when the commercial was big. But it never induced me to actually buy the brand but the name "Red Rose Tea" is forever seared into brain. :)
As for the Wayback Machine, suffice it to say that at my age, I do spend a good amount of time there for the old stuff.

We used to watch them pour slag at night on the way home from Grandma’s house in Dormont. We’d pretend it was a volcano.

From chimps to tea to slag...FR truly covers it all. Here's a good article about
Brown's Dump, fondly remembered as the slag heap. There was a drive-in not far away on Route 51 and you could either watch the movie or look out at the side windows and watch the orange glow as the cars dumped their cargo down the side.

Might also have been the Scandinavian in me that brought me to tea (or the similarity to the winter Glug)
Just out of curiosity, how’s the EPA doing with those underground coal mine fires out there?

Yes, I remember. Haven't had Red Rose in years. Is it still around? Seems my local supermarket only sells Lipton, Tetley and some of those fancy brands like Bigelow.

Another ‘Burgh thing:Chicken on the hill
My sister wore a shirt with this slogan practically every day in the early 70’s. I finally asked my father a few months ago what it meant.

Ok I will have to ask my dad about that one!!! If it is a Pittsburgh sports thing, he will know it!

“Lib heads would be exploding.”
You might not be old enough to remember the asian ladies singing the Tetley tea jingle on tv.
That was the good old days sunny boy, no color problems, every was in black and white (or gray and fuzzy with crazy lines if someone turned on a light)
