One makes this kind of observation all the time, i.e. that if 10+5 = 15, then one less than ten plus one more than five is also fifteen.

My objection to the googled video would be the rhetoric of “anchoring” etc. They are replacing one rote system with another, more complicated one. They don’t seem to be conscious that this is what they are doing.

Educators need to justify their jobs, so they have to come up with new and ‘better’ ways of teaching.
Typical government, similar to OSHA and new safety rules.

Apparently the thought of little nudnik having to actually memorize something such as the multiplication tables is abhorrent.

I* thought common core math just allowed good guesses.

With the caveat that there's no such thing as a bad guess.....

Just imagine how they're screwing that up!

Yeah that one is a real pisser. It’s probably taken from a worksheet on estimating to the nearest ‘10’.

0 to 5 = lower 10, 6 to 9 = higher 10.

So, no, 75 is not a reasonable answer.
