Could a Freeper answer a question about bandwidth?

Posted on 09/23/2015 7:13:12 AM PDT by LouAvul

I subscribe to Netflix and Amazon. My ISP is Cox and the Cox box is situated next to the tv.

There's also a Samsung DVD/streaming movie box next to the tv.

Netflix movies stream fine. The problem is with Amazon. I can watch older (picture Paul Newman in "The Hustler", B&W) movies but with newer movies I'm getting, "Insufficient bandwidth" message.

However, on my computers I can stream those movies just fine.

Why is there insufficient bandwidth on the tv streaming just for newer (HD) movies? And just on Amazon?

Finally, how can this be fixed?

thanks

If you have the option of selecting a lower definition stream, try that and see if that improves the stream.

Wired ethernet or Wi-Fi to the Samsung DVD?

Before we changed from DSL, we could stream Netflix but not some Amazon. Amazon offers rentals for HD or regular, I’m guessing Amazon doesn’t buffer as well as Netflix? You can probably run it on your computer because it has more memory than your box to buffer. Just guessing. We had a 6 dwn with At&T and we switched to Time Warner for 300 and no more problems.

That is my question too. I had a Sony Streaming player that would stream Amazon then slow way down for no apparent reason. Hard wiring it to router/modem solved the problem.

Where does bandwidth go when it’s wasted?

If your Cox cable modem is right next door, try disabling Wi-Fi in the DVD and run a wired ethernet to it instead. The problem may be that the Samsung box is so close to the Cox box that the Wi-Fi signal is too strong and is distorting, causing the bitrate to drop somewhat, and Amazon's software is detecting the connection speed and rejecting the connection.

Pure speculation on my part but you at least have something to try.

1) First test a wired connection to your router to the DVD (if possible).

2) Most routers have a QOS (quality of service) setting to give priority to a device over WIFI.

How old is your router?

WIFI is not good for streaming to DVD’s because you never really know how good of a client you have, some use dongles for wifi which is crappy. No doubt streaming is an after thought on most DVD players.

Get a Roku-2 or 3. They have wired connections which is snappy fast.
Separate devices for each task is really the best and a ROKU for $60 is pretty good buy.

If it’s still slow it could be your ISP.

Are you transmitting from the Samsung device to the tv wirelessly? That could be the issue, if there is interference or something going on. If you are able to make a physical connection, I would try that and see if it resolves it.

Can’t say what will help, but Amazon doesn’t stream well to my DVD/bluray players, but does just fine streaming to my Roku on the same network.

Use Speedtest website to debug your WiFi/Network.
Highly likely your router is the limiting issue.

If Speedtest.net reports around 6Mb download, you are on DSL and probably out of luck.
Its unbelievable that ATT/COX refuse to upgrade their systems in some cities.

I have had to upgrade modems 3 times and routers 3 times with Cox over the last 2 decades. They just get to be out-of-date.

The last upgrade was to a 3.0 DOCSIS Modem/Router combo early last year.

As they upgraded their service, the older modems and routers just couldn’t handle things.

I have the mid-level ‘preferred’ service — 50 Mbps/350 GB upload/download. I don’t have Amazon service, but Netflix loads almost immediately through my ROKU 3 box.

What an ignorant question. Of course a Freeper can answer the question. A Freeper can answer any question.

The answer may lack relevance to the question or the article posted.

“Finally, how can this be fixed?”

Get more bandwidth. You didn’t say how much bandwidth you have.
