What’s off-putting about home applications is that you usually don’t wallpaper your windows. Don’t windows allow leaks?

All really secure places do not have windows.

It is rare that an entire structure has to be shielded. Only the places where one wants to do secure work. An interior room with no windows and a secured door would be just fine.

The fireplace would defeat it. Every time you opened the door to let the dog and cat out would defeat it. Can’t go to work or to the grocery store or pick up your mail or newspaper. Can’t plug in the computer or tv. Forget the A/C.

Just a few days ago, I had a chance to try out an RF free room. It was all steel, and the door mechanism really cinched it tight on a seal. And even after all that, it still took 20 seconds for my phone to lose signal.

Were you using the phone, or just watching the indicator?

The indicators lag behind the actual signal strength.

They use the VACIS system to scan cargo containers at ports in NYC. The company I work for built them, and I know several people who were involved. They wouldn’t work on a house due to the size and geometry involved.

Yes, while the door is open, you would have leakage. But, you just have to be sure you don't do anything you don't want to leak while the door is open.

Everything else can be handled with waveguides and filters:

I was watching the indicator...but the people who worked there said it was SOP to wait 30 seconds. I thought it should be near instantaneous.

No, the indicator has a lag. I'm not sure if it is intentional, or a function of how it is measured. Since it's a digital signal, there's more to the metric than just RF signal strength.

Oh I understand the indicator lags...but the people working there typically act as if the signal still lasts for 30 seconds.

Here is what they do: Say Jared Fogle gets arrested and bonds out. The first thing he does is run to a computer and send a “z-all” command to his phone...so when law enforcement powers up his phone it wipes all the kiddie porn off. To prevent this, the technicians processing his phone take it into this room to power it up ‘off network’, and copy its contents to a hard drive. And their SOP is to wait 30 seconds between closing the door and powering up - must be precautionary.

Chalk it up to ignorance. Once the door is closed, the signal is lost.

However, there is an exception -- but not for cell phones. The digital satellite radio transmitters have FEC (forward error correction). So, a signal dropout can last for a while without interrupting the audio.

This means you can drive under a concrete overpass that briefly blocks the signal, and it can recover without you noticing an interruption. But, if you PARK under one, the audio will drop out after a short delay.

I park my car under a metal carport. I've timed it, and it lasts about 10 seconds before the stuttering starts and it drops out altogether.
