Syphilis had become relatively rare in developed countries since the discovery of penicillin, though it continues to plague many parts of the global South.

Naomi here inadvertently touches on where the disease is now coming from...but just can't bring herself to say it---through illegal immigration, just like TB and other previously stamped out bacterial diseases and viruses.
