SALEM, Ore.,- The famous jogger-attacking owl of Salem, Ore., appears to have returned to the town -- or at least inspired a new flock of imitators.
The Oregon Water Resources Department said two workers were attacked in separate incidents in different Salem locations Tuesday, the first leaving marks on the man's head and the second knocking a hat off a worker's head.
Officials said neither man was seriously injured.
The first worker to be attacked, Dwight French, described his injuries as similar to those from "a really violent haircut."
"It's the right time of year for the barred owls to become territorial," David Craig, a biology professor and animal behavior specialist at Willamette University, told the Statesman-Journal newspaper.
The attacks may have been the work of the same dive-bombing owl blamed for at least four attacks on joggers early in 2015. The attacks inspired the city to recommend hard hats while jogging in certain areas, and the signs were soon augmented by owl attack warning signs designed by MSNBC host Rachel Maddow.
The dive-bombing owl, nicknamed "Owlcapone" by some local residents, inspired several T-shirts and beers from local breweries.
Who gives a hoot?
On her next campaign trip to Oregon, I encourage Hillary to get some exercise and go for a nice jog.
One night walking my dog had a big white owl swoosh right by my head....yeah...in Oregon....those owls in Oregon are mean/s
Owl chicks nearby? Birds will protect their babies. Especially when they leave the nest and are still learning to fly.
Easy mistake to make.
Even nature hates the Godless.
I used to get swooped at by a kingbird on the way to work.
Much smaller and less taloned than a barred owl. You could put your eye out with one of those.
I had a barred owl as a pet when I was in my early teens. Towards evening he would get playful. His game was to swoop down and GENTLY graze your head with his claws. He never did any damage.
We also had magpies, crows, and for a brief time while we were nursing him back to health, a great horned owl.
Owl, that hurt!
I am thinking there would not be any chicks in the nest right now, at the end of December.
I would so NOT want to be dive bombed by an owl!
I hope that kitty/owl story had a happy ending.
Aw, that’s too cute. I had a cat that looked just like that who loved to walk around in the middle of the flock of wild turkeys that lived around our apartment complex.
I think it’s for the birds, myself.
Owl my balls. ;)
Years ago, I read an article on falconry. It mentioned a guy that had an owl (in lieu of a falcon), and would fly the owl at rodents in a nearby cemetery in the evening.
