Here is the link to the original Tears in Rain soliloquy.

Tears in Rain

I found it to be such a dramatic turn in the movie and only later found out it was unscripted by Rutger Hauer.

Hauer described this as "opera talk" and "hi-tech speech" with no bearing on the rest of the film, so he "put a knife in it" the night before filming, without Scott's knowledge.[8] In an interview with Dan Jolin, Hauer said that these final lines showed that Batty wanted to "make his mark on existence ... the replicant in the final scene, by dying, shows Deckard what a real man is made of."[9]

When Hauer performed the scene, the film crew applauded and some even cried.[10]

Yeah! Was showing my mom that clip earlier tonight, and told her about Hauer improvising. Such a beautiful scene. I’ve seen it so many times, but almost started crying watching it tonight. :) Just one of the best scenes from a movie, IMO.

I agree. I remember back to the first time in the theatre. There was a great deal of tension and the movie moved quickly. It was that scene that floored me in the end. I remember mulling over why are they killing them and who really were the replicants.

What an amazing line that has to bore deep into everyones psych. "Tears in rain. Time to die."

The replicant theme was never really explored again until the movie Moon. There is a bit of a spoiler if you haven't seen it yet. If you haven't seen it yet, move it to the top of your list. The movie has a fantastic soundtrack by Clint Mansell.

My wife is not into SciFi. She watched the movie and was transfixed by it. She didn't really see it as typical SciFi, however she found it haunting.

I think both films touched an area that we are rapidly approaching.

I never saw BR in the theatre! I regret it, but I don't think it was on my radar at that time. I think the first time was afew years later on cable. A friend and I have talked about going back in time to see it when on opening night. Wouldn't that be fun!?! I wish they would do a theatrical release of it for one of the anniversaries. 35th (almost put 25th...my how time flies!) is coming up next year.

It truly does. It touches on fears most of us can relate to. It's a violent scene, but there is some comedy and playfulness in it when Hauer is teasing Ford to "get it up or I'm gonna have to kill ya". To me it's about regret, helplessness, teaching, mercy, acceptance, and a whole lot more I could probably come up with.

I've never heard of the movie nor the composer. Definitely interested. I love movie music.

When I was showing my mom the clips from it earlier, she couldn't think if she had seen it or not. She was asking me if Mel Gibson was in it...lol. She's not into sci-fi type stuff, so I don't know if she would enjoy it or not. I'm not huge into sci-fi, but there are certain sci-fi films that I really love. I'm sure I could come up with a top 10 list easily. Blade Runner is at the top. 2001 is right next to it or a very close 2nd.

Yup, the greatest last words in movie history.

The greatest last words in cable history? Mike Ehrmantraut to Walter White in Breaking Bad: “Would you shut the eff up and let me die in peace!”
