Earth's temperature depends on where you put thermometer
Associated Press ^ | Jan. 20, 2016 12:39 PM EST | Seth Borenstein

When it comes to measuring global warming, it's all about altitude.

Temperature readings taken close to Earth's surface -- about 6 feet off the ground -- show a slightly warmer planet than measurements taken from on high by satellites in orbit.

And that discrepancy has given ammunition to climate-change doubters.

Government agencies and most scientists rely primarily on ground measurements, and they show that 2015 was the warmest year on record.

The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, NASA, the Japanese and British meteorological agencies and the World Meteorological Organization all use ground data. It's a matter of better accuracy and relevance, scientists say. ...

There’ll be plenty of suggestions as to where to put the thermometer, I’m sure!

Turn it over, and put the thermometer in there.

BTW, it's colder in Antarctica, just sayin'

There’s a huge cloud of methane coming out of CA so maybe that’s an indication where to put it.

Satellites are by far the most accurate means of taking the earth’s temperature. Ground based stations have well documented issues with quality control. Many are have been placed on or near airport tarmacs; next to air conditioning heat exchangers, etc. etc... And then there is the way that the data is homogenized where huge swaths of wilderness in the far North are represented by one thermometer in the middle of a city thousands of miles away. It is crazy! Strangely enough and not mentioned in this article ground monitoring stations located in rural areas have been showing a cooling trend over the past ten years.

Even more surprising:

Placed in the shade of spreading oak it’s cooler than in direct sunshine 10 feet from oak shadow.

Magic...

You know who’s fault it is for global warming? Asphalt. ;-)

Thermometers that use to be in towns with dirt or gravel roads are now in cities who’s roads and parking lots are covered with black asphalt. They have become heat islands. The rest of the earth is the same temperature it has always been.

So easy, so easy....

The writer claims that very sparcely situated ground sampling, consisting of a jokingly small amount of sensors, many placed where they should not be, is superior to looking down and taking an integrated set of data.

And so goes what passes for journalism.

No wonder the writer is a writer, looking for info from D students who would be flinging hash were govt grants not keeping a roof over their heads.

The article is bull-Obama.

Ground-based thermometers measure of the rate of urban sprawl. They have been shown to be a poor indicator of temperature change over a long period of time.

Well when they expect us to believe they can predict a 0.6 degree temperature change over the next hundred years, that is an accuracy unable to attain merely using the scientific concept of “significant figures”.

Basically it means you cannot measure to an accuracy greater than your measuring device. If all you have is a yardstick, you can’t measure something to thousandths of an inch.

And they are going to use TREE RINGS??? to tell us temperature that accurately over hundreds of years..?

It is beyond stupid.

PLUS WE KNOW THEY MANIPULATED THE DATA- THEY SHOULD BE FIRED FOR THAT
