WASHINGTON — A firefighter and the elderly woman he helped save are both recovering at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Northwest.

The fire started Wednesday afternoon along the 1700 block of Minnesota Avenue in Southeast.

“It was intense, very intense,” said D.C. police officer Willie Tabor. “Going up in there, in that smoke, hits you right at first, hits you right in the face.”

The officers were flagged down by a resident of the building. They got three residents and a dog out of the building.

D.C. firefighter Danny Lovato gave his mask to Phyllis Terrell, who was rescued from the top floor of the three-story building.

He shouldn’t have done that. Had he lost consciousness they would both die. Proper procedure is to get her out and administer oxygen.

Bad move.

I’d probably have done the same...

Why don’t they start carrying those ‘Spare Air” mini tanks like the scuba folks use.Gives you about 5 minutes of air.

Well, this is Washington DC. DemocRAT paradise. Emergency services are run about as well as you can imagine. Innovative ideas such as you suggest die on the bureaucratic vine.

I actually saw a firefighter do that for a dog once. The dog seemed to know he was helping. Mind blowing.

Dog went from limp as he carried him out to awake and alert right before my eyes. Not my dog. It was a good thing to see.

Doesn't surprise me. One of the best episodes of "Pit Bulls and Parolees" was where Tia took a Pit Bull pup to a home visit where they had an adult female Pit. The female didn't want to have anything to do with the pup, and kept avoiding him. Until the pup accidentally wandered into a fire ant hole! Tia scooped up the poor animal and doused him in the swimming pool to get the ants off, but the pup was full of bites - he was crying in pain. The adult female immediately ran to the pup, and from that moment on, the bond was set. It was amazing to watch.

Animals are amazing creatures, with a capacity to love.
