The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings Gardeners. It has been a very nice day in Missouri with plenty of sunshine. Happy Emancipation Day to all. How Ironic that it falls on the 15th. Wouldn't it be nice if we were Emancipated from paying Income Tax? Glad to have the few extra days to get info together to file an extension.

Volunteer Potatoes appear to be recovering a bit from the frost.

About half of the cold-hardy Kiwi leaves turned brown. Spinach appears to be sprouting. Will be covering the area around the volunteer potatoes with a bit more compost/mulch this weekend.

Lots of other projects though, so not too much time. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Got my taxes in last week, I planted some lilies, begonias and misc in the flower beds, then went to the dr. because of this nasty cough. I almost have pneumonia, I should have known. No appetite, no fever, no energy. Got new meds.

In the Colorado Rockies it is snowing and the forecast is that it will continue till Sunday with possibly 2 ft of wet spring snow. I 70 is already closed in the mountains and Denver International Airport has already cancelled 400 flights for Saturday.

Planted my 1st garden in since 2013. Been remodeling on the house, which then called for rehabbing my destroyed back yard! Green beans are up, trying a new way to plant the tomatoes - so have 15 tom plants, some zucchini, squash and peppers. I’ve got 20 okra plants I started from seed that I will transplant in the garden soon, and in a couple of weeks it will be time for black-eyed peas. My husband and I agree you can’t have too many of those.

I am SERIOUSLY thinking of an underground greenhouse! Been wanting one for 4 years or so, but it’s hard to know just how to build it, especially when most of them are designed for more Northerly zones. But we are just getting a tornado room completed & the guy tells me he can build the greenhouse, so I may do that when it’s closer to summer & I don’t have to worry about rain.

Do any of you have advice or information about a sunken greenhouse?

I continue to be thankful that I don’t live in that type of environment. When I was a kid, we took a trip to Yellowstone National Park in June. I was amazed to see snow stacked up 5 ft. high or more all along the road.

Outside of Cody, we ran into a hail storm of soft ball size hail. Had to pull off at the first available place-a camp ground. We had to sweep hail off the picnic table. The trailer only had a little oven for heat, so it was pretty chilly inside, but a lot better than outdoors.

What an intriguing idea. Do you think he’ll be able to rig up some sort of solar panel power, or are you going to rely on electric grow lights?

I am hoping that this year is the year we get our greenhouse/sunroom set up on the back patio. Right now I grow some plants in the winter inside the house in front of that patio door, but it crowds my computer area, and I can’t grow as much fresh stuff as I would like.

Just put in 200 Copra, 75 cipollini, and 25 red torpedo. Potatoes went in yesterday. I’m read to taste the tomatoes, but they can’t even go in the ground for a month!

It's been busy around our place today. My dad came over to help a bit which is always a treat. We started a Mary flower garden for my ten year old. She has only wanted one for two years now. I tore down the small old chicken run to make room for the much larger run that has to go up soon for the 20 chicks in my garage. And with the generous donation of free old wood from my brother, my husband has been throwing garden boxes together for me so I can have some boundaries for lettuce/spinach and a few other plants that I don't want to spread all over the garden. Will help keep weeds at bay, too, after I fill in the walkways with hay. I'm so happy to not be pregnant/have a newborn this planting season! Oh! We also have a rabbitry going up. My daughter is breeding her angora rabbits to build up her fiber/yarn stash.

I don’t see the + in a greenhouse underground. If you want to start seeds early, south and west exposure with big glass windows will do the trick.

A year ago we started seeds in mid January but found this was pushing us to take our plants outside too early. February 10 this time around is working well for us. All out plants are out, covered by frost blanket covers overnight.

There are some beautiful glass greenhouses on the market. Before you buy, take a critical look at where your sun light comes in and how you can take advantage of it. You may not need a greenhouse.

It is so sad that lettuce comes up so quickly in the spring, but tomatoes to go with the lettuce don’t. LOL

Nice looking garden areas. I wish I could get my grand daughter interested in gardening. She is now 13 and has resisted all my best efforts for several years.

I know! Here, cilantro starts to bolt about the time the ‘maters and jalapeños are ready. Not fair!

Yes, but cilantro for spice can be grown in less space than tomatoes and peppers. LOL

It was a Gardeners Day on Humboldt Bay today. I got back from my errands at 11;30, changed to my garden clothes, went out in the garden and took a 2 hour nap...

My oldest son doesn't want anything to do with the garden or the animals. Oldest daughter wants more animals. Middle daughter wants more flowers. The other four are hit and miss right now, still young. It really is a skill that is so important to at least try! I struggle with gardening but keep plugging away. It isn't easy. I see folks online that talk about a SHTF scenario and how they'll just grow food but have never actually tried to garden. Ugh! I only get anything done because my dad is a farmer at heart. He keeps nudging me along.

Now that I think about it, the oldest daughter has recently expressed an interest in gardening so she can grow plants she can use as natural dyes for the rabbit wool. I bought her a book so she can tell me what she wants to plant. Maybe your granddaughter just hasn't figured out her niche yet! Maybe start small with lemon balm or lavender and let her make lip balm or soap with it? Just a thought. :0)

Finally got my welder assembled and working, so I could repair the hitch on the garden tractor. So much easier to trailer the water to where I need it. Of course, I won’t be watering until next weekend, as we’re getting long, slow soaking rains—maybe a skiff of snow, too—through Tuesday afternoon/evening.

Still no sign of carrots, so will replant next week. Turnip & pea seedlings are looking good, as is the garlic.

I really hate inaccurate packaging. Yesterday, I opened one of my two “100 bulb” bags of onion sets; soaked them, then planted them. 185 were in the bag, and the other look just the same. I bought 2 bags because I wanted between 150 & 200 sets, so one would have been sufficient. Really don’t want to devote that much extra space to them.

How long, and how, can the other bag be saved? Some are beginning to sprout in the bag. I COULD plant them in the Fall, if they’ll keep.

She likes to draw dinosaurs and play on the computer, but maybe I’ll come up with something.
