Devastating 'World War ZERO' destroyed ancient Mediterranean civilisations and plunged Europe into a dark age

11:41, 13 MAY 2016 UPDATED 11:44, 13 MAY 2016 BY JASPER HAMILL

Controversial theory finally identifies mysterious 'Sea Peoples' blamed for cataclysmic series of events which changed the course of history

It was a disaster which destroyed the ancient world's greatest civilisations and plunged Europe into a dark age that lasted centuries.

Now one archaeologist think he's worked out who's to blame for sparking an event he calls "World War Zero", but which most academics refer to as the The Late Bronze Age Collapse .

At some point between 1200 and 1150 BC, the advanced civilisations in the Mediterranean suddenly collapsed after a little understood group of vicious barbarians dubbed "The Sea Peoples" swept across the region.

We know about these savage invaders due to ancient Egyptian inscriptions which describe a mass movement of people so brutal that "no land could stand before their arms".

But despite years of study, no academic has been able to fully prove their true identity or explain what really happened in "the crisis years".

Eberhard Zangger, head of an organisation called Luwian Studies , has now stepped in to offer his own explanation for the cause of this ancient cataclysm.

On a new website set up to publicise his theories, his organisation said that previous explanations for the invasion of the Sea People "have failed".

Zangger's zinger of an idea hinges around the claim that a lost civilisation called the Luwians from Anatolia, in modern-day Turkey, may have caused the disaster, which was the result of three great conflicts.

My personal theory of the collapse of the Bronze age has to do with the coming of the iron age. Bronze was like the oil economies of today - no more oil and we enter a Mad Max kind of world. Bronze needed tin which was rare and all the easily located tin was exhausted.

This is probably what fueled the discovery of an alternative to bronze like iron.

With the collapse of the bronze age trade routes, the kingdoms at the periphery of the civilized word that had arisen to facilitate the trade to the more advanced civilizations also collapsed.

I also think the Bronze Age saw the first attempt to explore the world in search of tin. Exploring the world was time consuming and expensive but discovering tin and copper was worth the expense. But once the iron age came about the civilizations exploring the world for financial gain (like the Phoenicians) stopped doing so. These geographic discoveries were treated as highly classified business secrets passed down from father to son but with the end of explorations this memory faded with some legends remaining in its place.

Human civilization is FAR FAR older than the “acceptable theories” of history that exist.

Many ancient Indian Texts, the Hebrew Bible, and other ancient legends all point to this direction.

So if these Luwians were the Sea People then where are their seaports?

Titus 1:12King James Version (KJV)

12 One of themselves, even a prophet of their own, said, the Cretians are alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies.

And parvenues and lazybones. Thanks to the Cretans we couldn’t have anything nice.

Santorini detonating turned the eastern Med into the bronze age equivalent of ‘Mad Max’.

I never understood if Paul was talking about native Cretans or Jews living in Crete.

Santorini detonating turned the eastern Med into the bronze age equivalent of ‘Mad Max’.

Or it was the straw that broke the camel's back. Remember oil ran out in the Mad Max world leading to a nuclear exchange.

In the first Mad Max movie they are trying to keep the world together - it kind of still functions in the same way as the good old days but more debased, By the Road Warrior sequel the nukes already were detonated and it is the aftermath.

That certainly could have been a factor, but that explanation would be incomplete as people would have had the ability to repurpose the existing bronze, tin, and copper into new uses. It was probably a singularity of events that all came together at the right time.
