For her upcoming 102nd birthday, Helen Estes had the idea to celebrate by riding a camel. Estes has already checked off a number of items from her bucket list like riding a motorcycle, hot air ballooning, and attending Mardis Gras.
"When I was in junior high we were studying the Arabian Knights and I guess I must have been bug eyed or something, because I wanted to experience what they did," said Estes.
When she told her community living place what she wanted to do for her 102nd birthday, Polo Park Estates did not hesitate to make it happen. It turned out the cook knew a guy in East Texas who has been handling camels his whole life.
"These are the kind of calls I live for," says Doug Baum, owner of Texas Camel Corps near Waco. "Honestly, I had to worry because she was ... almost 102 years old."
But she handled it just fine according Baum.
The event attracted quite the crowd when people passing by saw camels in front of Polo Park Estates.
When asked what else she wants to check off her bucket list next, Estes said, "If I find out, I will let you know."
I rode one when I was half her age. I may be on a much shorter timeline though.
The man who had rented them the camel was very upset and screamed, “Where is my camel?”
They replied, “Well, we were riding along when we kept hearing people say, “Look at the two assholes on that camel!” So finally we got off to take a look and the damn camel ran away!”
Backstory: Hillary was on a trip through the desert and saw those two rubes talking about renting a camel. So she had Huma drive her ahead in her rented Range Rover to a small village and met with the local Muslim Imam. She said, "you want a free camel?" And he said he did. So she told him to tell the local boys how to mock the rubes, and then she made a speech about harmony with the Middle East. The Imam certified the value of the speech to the UN, which tapped a humanitarian fund held by Goldman Sachs to pay the Clinton Foundation $900,000 for the speech.
By the time the rubes were reporting the lost camel that the Imam was riding, Hillary was taking off in a Lear Jet while Huma was storing the stolen Range Rover on a freighter.
I’m a lot younger than her and found my one camel ride (in the United Arab Emirates) rather difficult.But I have two bad hips and that was a big part of it...they’re tough to get on to and off of.
Not a camel, but I cherish a picture of my 90 year old grandmother dressed in pioneer garb with a sun bonnet, carrying an old shot gun and riding a mule.
Every carnival and festival used to have camel rides and elephant rides back in the day.
They’d give out a sticker after the ride saying, “I rode a camel” or “I rode an elephant”.
I think they still do this.
