I also have an imac and i love it...this is a backup/work laptop that I keep around. It’s just a pain when crap like this one happens
oh my Gosh. Thank you for posting this. I used thist once at a place that had the Update function disabled. Works perfectly and every time.
I had the same problem back in March. I kept trying to get updates but after 4 hours nothing.
Finally I tried this.
Don’t install anything (Nortons or whatever, Window 10 blocker, etc) but Windows Updates until your system is up to date. Once you have the update list, install all of them together. Installing updates in batches will not speed the process or make it better.
1.BEFORE you start the re-install, download (32 or 64 bit) KB3083710 and KB3102810 in advance, and store on a USB stick
2.Start and complete the re-install of Windows 7 SP1
3.BEFORE the newly installed system can go online for the first time, disconnect the computer from the Internet. This timing is critical.
4.Manually install KB3083710 and restart.
5.Manually install KB3102810 and restart.
6.Restore the Internet connection and launch Windows Update as normal.
7.After a few minutes, you should have plenty of updates to download and install.
I got this from Microsoft Community.
I think Microsoft wants you to intall Win 10.
It’s not so bad. I have that on my laptop and works fine — knock wood.
A couple things:
1. Never10.exe is a downloadable utility that will prevent Win 10 from ever trying to load. The little Win 10 icon goes away (after a restart) and everything.
2. The slow response times could be the result of a lot of people trying to hit the MS servers simultaneously to upgrade to Win 10. The final day to do so, supposedly, was last Friday. There could’ve been a lot of people queued up and slowing everything down.
I know I was trying to run the 100+ updates required for a couple of new Win 7 machines and they wouldn’t run at all last Friday. Updates are now beginning to run.
Try the following: Set automatic updates to “Never check for updates” and restart. Install KB3161608.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3161608
That is, if it is just sitting there and not doing updates.

If I can push-in: I tried to download Win10 on my HP and got nothing but grief.
But that’s not my problem today.
I got my better half a Samsung Chromebook 3 today. McAfee says they do not offer an anti-virus protection for that device.
The nice young man on the other side of the world said to contact Samsung. There’s nothing I can see in the owner’s manual.
How do I protect this little laptop from e-Reivers? Anyone know? (No, we’re not logged on yet.)
Dude, read up-thread. If you are comfortable with it, jettison McAfee now...it takes up “buckets” of memory...both HD and RAM (swap-mode)
If you/wife will be surfing a wide-range of internet sites, pay for the AVG-Pro, SuperSpyWare and MalwareBytes. Maybe get the CCleaner-free. CC will remove tracking cookies in short-order.
I recommended going through CNET.com for all these downloads.

And, dude...
I despise Bill Gates. He shows up in the middle of the night and wants to tweak my PC.
If I am ever in the physical proximity of Herr Gates, he will be wearing a relief-impression of my wedding ring on his jaw!
Dude ... I just want to get it, then forget it for a year.
But thanks for the info.

My son downloaded Ubunto and installed it on a laptop that he couldn’t get going with 7. He likes it.
First I’ve ever heard of Firefox having a keylogger built in. You sure about that?
I’m running into the same problem on the Littel Crazy Woman’s W7 Sony laptop.
I click on update, and it just sits there, with the little green cyclon bar going back and forth, but 0 kb’s transfered. For over an hour.
I loath Windows.
The issue many of us have with it is, the insistence of Microsoft for the “Free” upgrade.

Hey Bendy!
I gots me a “graphic from another thread”!
