My late father who served in the Army between 1939 and 1963 hated ( not really a strong enough word) all things Asian!
It still gives me nightmares and I always pray for these sailors in their horrible slow death, just as I pray for the poor people entombed under the WTC, who also took weeks to die.

In some mysterious fashion it could be merciful to die a slow painful death, though my natural person wishes it on no one nor wish it for myself.
The reason is that it can help one stop to reflect on how long eternity really is and how awful it will be to spend an eternity of torment in hell. For many a slow painful death may be the only thing in their lifetime that will get their attention and hopefully it will lead to a complete and perfect contrition for their sins, and produce the fruit of a longing for God and heaven which they had never dreamed was possible.
That’s probably about a close as it can get!
I modified the example from the dictionary and added that little extra at the end to truly capture his feelings.
He execrated all Asian people and would remind them he used to shoot them in the wars!

livius, do you HAVE a source for the claim re. WTC?
My dad was not on WV when she sank. He was on CV-5 USS Yorktown sitting in dry dock # 1 at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He and about half of the Yorktown engineering personnel were assigned to the West Virginia after Yorktown was sunk at Midway in June 1942. His first job on WV was to help clean 5 feet of mud out of one of the engine rooms. He said that they did uncover two bodies of WV sailors that were killed when she was sunk.

I had not heard about people being trapped at the WTC, who took weeks to die.
Where did you get that information?

There is a new film about the USS Oklahoma. They interviewed one of the men who was trapped, and how they could the activity of the rescue attempts. He trapped for about 30 hours. This films follows 3 or 4 families, and one was bringing home for proper burial the remains of a family member who served on the Oklahoma.

It was in the NYC press later, and in fact even during the weeks afterwards they knew that there were people they simply would not be able to reach. When they finally excavated areas at the bottom, they found pockets (such as under stairs) with people who had been trapped in them.
