More Americans identify themselves as conservative than as liberal or moderate, a new Gallup poll says. While the percentage of conservatives has stayed about the same since the early 1990s, the percentage of liberals has increased and the percentage of moderates has fallen.

The poll found that in 2016, 36 percent of Americans said they are conservative, compared with 25 percent who identified as liberal (up from 17 percent in the 1990s); and 34 percent who identified as moderate (down from 43 percent in the early 1990s).

Since Gallup started to routinely measure Americans’ political ideology in 1992, conservative identification has varied between 36-40 percent.

Gallup notes that “moderates” were the most prevalent group from 1992 to 2002, before conservatives overtook them in 2003. …

I can easily identify leftwingers from 100 yards away with their ugly birth-control eyeglasses, silly Birkenstock sandals, unattractive hairstyles, and combined smell of patchouli oil and sweat.

This remains a conservative nation. The democrat party wins by cheating, lying, and preying on the uninformed. I hope that’s come to an end.

After two terms of Trunp, the percentage of Americans identifying themselves as "Liberal" will drop back to below 17% (probably lower).

Remember, after Reagan, most Liberals stopped calling themselves "Liberals." They were too ashamed. They went with "Independent" or "Progressive."

Democrats run against the person, not on ideas, and Conservatives care about morals. The Democrat strategy is, and has been for many years, to attack the candidate to make conservatives doubt his moral standards. And enough Conservatives fall for the tactic and refuse to vote that Democrats are able to win elections.

The Democrats used the same strategy this election, too. They relentless attacked Trump and portrayed him as a monster, and they continue the attack to this day. While most Conservative candidates roll belly-up (and lose) when they are attacked in this manner, Trump fought back (and won).

Until all Conservatives learn to dismiss the ad hominem attacks and force Democrats to campaign on the issues, liberals will continue to win elections. We must all fight back against their strategy.

There is a large group who are to the left of liberals that claim to be independent. My brother being an example. He is to the left of Bernie but tries to claim he is an independent.

The other technique we as Conservatives must master is fitting our viewpoints and idealogy into 30-second soundbites.
That has been used against us in the past. President Trump further hones his Twitter method daily. Republicans must do likewise.
Many of our fellow citizens have the attention span of a mayfly and we need to communicate quickly.

We are becoming more polarized....less and less moderates which means there is not middle ground anymore.

You only have to read the comments after articles to know how dangerous this is for a society.

The “middle ground” keeps shifting more and more to the left. If the “right” is defined as Constitutional conservatism and private morality (rather than immorality), then the real danger is any move away from that.

“Progressive” is an old term that socialists such as Woodrow Wilson et al were fond of. That doesn’t even work anymore; after all, John McCain was openly a “progressive” back in 2008, remember.

“Independent” is a clever canard that has not been scrutinized by the public, that is as yet; cf. Bernie Sanders.

Those in the GOP who “roll belly-up” in the face of attacks from the left are not conservatives, bottom line. They are “New Republicans” in the vein of people like Arthur Larson, the man who wrote “A Republican Looks At His Party”, which was a virtual copy of Democrat Dean Acheson’s “A Democrat Looks At His Party”, both books promoting the notion of the federal government requiring the power to implement programs ostensibly for meeting a predefined alleged “need” of the people that they claim could not be met by states or by private individuals.

Again, a meaningless poll. It is not objective, like asking a number of questions to determine a place on the spectrum, but totally subjective. A good example is George W Bush. I am sure he thinks he is not only conservative, but very conservative, while objectively he is at best centrist. I find people consider themselves more conservative than they really are. That is the problem. The media at large don’t think of themselves as liberal, but as centrist.
