Except in this case, they can’t turn it over, because Alexa doesn’t collect it. It only remembers what you ask of it.

Your IT person at work knows far more about you than Alexa ever will.

I'm not sure you are right. From what I'm hearing, Alexa listens to EVERYTHING, and uploads it to the cloud. If you mentioned something in passing in range of it's hearing, it's recorded. The only time it responds is when you say Alexa, with a request. It still has everything you have said even if you weren't using it for a task. Amazon says it gets the data to serve you better. If you are talking about a gun, they may connect you with Cabella's.

There is about to be a big push for refrigerators, washers and dryers, and many other appliances to do the same, so every house eventually will have this in their homes, AND CARS. I heard a talking head say, you mean I have to put the laundry in myself, but just speak to it to start the wash? She seemed perturbed that it would cost more but wouldn't put the clothes in for her. In a few years, it won't cost more and might even be required.

There comes a point where common sense should take over and you just save your money and push the button yourself. I've already commented that I can't believe someone would buy an $80k automobile and then let it drive itself. I'll wager most people would get in the car and freak out if they let go of the controls and were going over 30 mph. Who wants a Tesla that goes 0-60 in 3 seconds and let a computer drive it? I can just imagine a driver yelling at his computer to floor board it to beat the idiot at the stoplight. Some cars won't even have steering wheels. We already have boxes under the seat that watch and record everything you do, including your GPS.

Your WiFi is shielded so it doesn’t get outside your house?

I’m not getting one of these fool things. Anyone too lazy to turn on their own damn lights is a pudding not a person.

Not to mention the hacking potential.

Look at the independent IT trades. Alexa stores your commands unless you manually delete them, like your browser. But unless you preface your command with the with the term Alexa, it neither listens nor remembers.

I finally got wifi to go outside the house with new routers (WR841HP) that support WDS. Now I have wifi down in the barn so I can see what my critters are doing.

Just don’t invite inarticulate people over.

When our toasters become smarter than us...

Name your dog, Alexa. “Alexa, get your head out of the toilet!” “Alexa, stop eating out of the litter box!” “Alexa, play dead.”

Anyone know where the plug is for this?

I think it needs recharged. It doesn't seem to do anything.

Has anyone set up a packet sniffer on the network to see what is sent when you say "Alexa, what time is it" vs just talking near it. Similarly, does the microphone-off button turn off the microphone or does it just not respond while listening and sending to Amazon?

I know that the only thing it understands locally is "Alexa". for anything else it sends the recording to Amazon which interprets it and responds. It is pretty stupid if it can't find the network.

The intelligence services and the tech giants are in bed together.
Google Earth was originally funded by the CIA to get satellite photos of everybody’s house, every street and building.

I got my wife one for Christmas.

It thinks we live in California because I didn’t use the app to change the default address.

If California starts sending us a state income tax bill then I will know....

We have a problem. :-)
