Mother of four builds home from scratch after watching YouTube tutorials
CBS News ^ | 1/12/2017 | Christina Capatides

Just a few years ago, Cara Brookins and her four kids felt trapped -- powerless to stop the domestic abuse happening around them, prisoners inside their own walls.

You see, for a short time, Brookins was married to a man who she says “descended into full-blown paranoid schizophrenia.” And even after the two were divorced, he continued to come around and frighten her family. (snip)

Brookins didn’t have enough money to buy the sort of home that could comfortably house her four kids, but she wanted them to be in a safe place. So, they moved out of the house she shared with her abusive husband and into a tiny home outside of Little Rock, Arkansas. Then, shortly afterward, Brookins had an epiphany.

“I had rented this cabin for a Thanksgiving getaway,” she tells CBS News. “And driving there, we passed this house that had been ravaged by a tornado. It was this beautiful dream house and it was sort of wide open. You don’t often get the opportunity to see the interior workings of a house, but looking at these 2x4s and these nails, it just looked so simple. I thought, ‘I could put this wall back up if I really tried. Maybe I should just start from scratch.’”

As it turned out, she had just enough money to buy all the construction supplies and an acre of land. So, without looking back, she and her family jumped headlong into the project.

“Once I had bought all these supplies and they were all piled up, there was no way out,” Brookins explains. “There wasn’t enough money to pay anyone to put them together. There was no plan B.”

Faced with the overwhelming task of constructing a house with their own hands, Brookins and her family turned to an unlikely source: YouTube.

Unlikely? Not any more. YouTube is the go to source to watch hands on demonstrations on how to build or do anything.

Beautiful home, BTW. I just hope her idiot ex doesn’t come around and screw things up.

More power to her and the kids.

Youtube has probably done more to educate people than PBS and the rest educational broadcasting.

I’ve learned tons of stuff and gotten a lot of good ideas. I wish some people could learn to hold a camera steady or use a tripod though.

There is no way that the picture you posted is not a PHOTOSHOPPED PHOTO.

First thing, easily noticed, is that the LIGHTING is completely off.

That was my initial reaction, as well. There is no way those people are standing on the lawn in front of that house.

the internet is just as much of a LEAP in information freedom and personal enlightenment as the invention of the printing press, think about it!

I think as some point Virtual reality + The Internet will lead to an Education revolution that promises to completely replace the failing public education system.

Are you a dummy with money who regularly gets cleaned out by sketchy mechanics..?

Just look up your problem on YouTube, order the cheap Chinese parts from Ebay, and fix it YOURSELF for 90% off.

Some of the vids have amazing detail, geared towards slobbering fools.

People are an amazing resource.

Not so fast buckaroo...Being in the photo buis for some time and trained in portrait photography the old analog way its easy to control your aperture and speed to cause the flash to drop of at or just past the subject .
That is called “Fill Flash” and is something todays digital amateurs know nothing about.

The brick and mortar no thought zone known as public education simply can’t cut it now.

My YT fodder is done I have to admit with the public TV mentality I learned from being in it. The only ones that are remotely instructive are a couple of electrolysis rust removal.

Living in an isolated, totally non-ethnic loction, this young girl learned 100% of her dancing from YouTube vids:

The people standing in front do “pop”, but I doubt it’s photoshopped. I think the photographer used a flash to light up the people in the foreground so they would stand out, while the rest of the scene is “natural” lighting.
