Freepers, I need some help. My daughter entered an art contest in SC and said she would do it if I would enter one as well. Do any of you know of reputable art contests that are online or local to SC??

TOPICS: Arts/Photography; Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: artcontest
Thank you for your help!

Can you enter the same one as your daughter? That would make for an interesting household.

99 Designs has quite a bunch of contests where you actually win design work that you get paid for.

I once visited an advertising company and watched some of their artists at work. I was really impressed with how good they were. I then discovered they were making fairly low wages.

You may want to contact your City Council to see if any safety campaigns, summer concerts, farmer’s markets, local theatre group performances, fund raising events, new restaurants, Church Bake Sales, New Hair Salons, Specials on Dog Vaccinations, Police and youth basketball events, Girl Scout Applications Week.
Walk-a-thons, Bike-a-thons,Easter Egg Rolls, Easter Seals Special Olympics,

Whatever you choose to investigate, make sure you and daughter will have enough time to create the art and send it to the judges. Choose something at least two months away, unless you can produce and package work very quickly. Many don’t want you to send the original art, preferring instead for you to send an email photo.
If you do send the original, understand you may never see it again. They aren’t usually that responsible in monitoring each and every piece of art. They should be, but since most the judges will not be artists themselves, they typically don’t take it as seriously as the artist will.
Good luck.

What about the folks that are organizing the contest your daughter is participating in? If they are organizing one, they probably know of others that you could participate in.

You might use google to see if there are contests or other arts-related events that are happening in your area. Check those out and talk to the folks that are organizing or participating in them. They might be able to help you.

What university or college close to you? You may call up or visit their Fine Arts department and speak to a professor or a few of the teaching assistants (usually graduate-level students). They can probably point you to a few, but you might have to be an enrolled student to enter.

Be sure to locate art supply stores that support the university, they are often staffed by fine arts students or long-time local artists and they can probably point out contests and or events that don’t require enrollment in a school to participate.

If you already do some art on your own but have never really shared it, you could work with local gallery or museum to see if you can arrange to have your work shown in a space. That’s as good as contest, IMO. Or, if that sounds intimidating or daunting, stop by a locally owned and operated coffee shop. Nearly always, they have the work of a local artist or student on their walls for a period of time. Talk to the baristas and ask how you should go about putting your work on display.

Good luck!

Callforentry.org lists juried contests all over the country. If you sign up you will get new show notifications every month.

Artmusecontest.com runs great monthly online contests. They break artists into 3 categories: budding, emerging and master so that you compete with artists at your own level. Cash prizes are awarded.

Good luck!

I told people what I made in TV production and got condolences.

The job itself was enjoyable but the office politics, top heavy PHB management, and comical pay with little real chance to move up made me give up professional poverty.

I appreciate people who can paint and draw well. My handwriting is typical left-handed epileptic arthritic chicken.

Don’t know about SC, but just about every county in NC has an Arts Council, hosting multiple competitions throughout the year. Very respectable venue and they take care of your art work. Many times the county Arts Council serves as a hub for art co-ops, groups and clubs.
