UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (AP) - Nearly 600 faculty and staff have taken a voluntary retirement package from Penn State University, including more than 400 employees on the main campus.

The Centre Daily Times (http://bit.ly/2mvKKvq ) reports 419 main campus employees took the offer, while 168 others did on satellite campuses.

Forty-six percent of employees eligible for the early retirement took it, more than the university anticipated. Faculty 62 and older and staff 60 and older were eligible for a year's lump sum pay if they had at least 15 years' service.

It would lead to a more diverse staff?
So, how is that a good thing?

Please tell me one of these retirements was AGW “Scientist” Dr. Michael Mann who has a penchant for cooking his “research data.”

I retired right at age 65 from my university. While weather was a major concern about staying in OH, I could have taught 2-3 more years at a very high salary.

However, I could read the tea leaves about political correctness, and prophesied to others before I left they would have a hard time teaching honestly very soon due to “diversity” and the need to not offend anyone. It is impossible to teach ANY truth and “not offend” someone.

Some of them blew me off. We’ll see. But I’m guessing that at least SOME of my concerns are reflected in this mass retirement at PSU.

If full professors retire and replaced by assistant professors the university can save a lot of money.
Assistant professors probably make between 1/3 and 1/2 the salary of a full professor. The benefits package for an assistant professor is usually smaller than the one for a full professor.

Many colleges also have phased-in retirement. Full professor teach half time (LOL) and earn half pay. The savings can be used to hire a new assistant professor.

I know that they have been pushing Global Penn State and this spokesman had a dual major in international politics. My feeling is that is what is meant.

The other alternative could be to provide a place to go for unemployed political staffers. Rachel Dolezal doesn’t seem to be doing too well these days, wonder if she’ll end up there?

“Assistant professors probably make between 1/3 and 1/2 the salary of a full professor.”

That gap seems a bit high to me. In many disciplines, there has been considerable salary compression, in which the salaries of newly hired assistant professors approach the average salary of non-chaired full professors. Here are some survey data that suggest average assistant professor pay is about one-third less than average full professor pay:

You’ve got adjuncts and grad students teaching classes so they have way undercut that already.

If 600 employees retired, how many were employed in the first place? The article doesn’t state. Regardless, the number appears excessive. What is the backstory?

I think you are probably right just due to the overwhelming response they got for that offer.

I wish they would offer me early retirement. I’d be gone and making more money in the private sector.

A lot are staffers, not profs. The main campus is huge.

17,000 full time faculty and staff. If they worked an average 20 year career, that would be 850 retiring annually.

So they hire Joe (dumbass) Biden and this is what happens next?

Good point. However, I was thinking of the salary of an experienced full professor at the high end of the salary matrix for fulls and a brand new assistant professor at the low end of the assistant professor salary matrix.

That gap could be about 50%. An assistant making only 33%
of full is unlikely.

FWIW, Penn and Penn State are different institutions. Biden is at Penn.

You aren’t taking into account the administrative bloat at many big colleges that wasn’t around 20 years ago.
