You can make an argument that Bruce was one of the the most well rounded of Bass players, Voice, Song Writer (peaked with Cream) and ability to play his Instrument. But strictly playing the Bass > John Entwistle and it isn’t even close. And John wrote some damn good songs inc. My Wife, Heaven and Hell, Trick of the Light, Success Story.......

FWIW, saw Clapton in 1970 when he was touring with Delaney & Bonnie & Friends.
Seems they were rather well-connected.
