'My problematic horrible shameful embarrassingly tragic f***ing life isn't getting any easier': Couple who ran Oakland 'Ghost Ship' warehouse where 36 died in a fire complain about hardships and plead for money

  1. Micah Allison, the partner of 'Ghost Ship' leader Derick Almena, posted plea for financial assistance on Facebook on behalf of the couple
  2. Allison's partner had been running artists' colony out of the cluttered warehouse until the deadly December 2 fire
  3. The mother-of-three writes they have spent all their Red Cross aid on necessities and cannot find work due to 'stigma'

The couple who ran the notorious Oakland artists' colony known as the 'Ghost Ship,' where 36 people burned to death in a fire in December have taken to social media to lament their fate and plead for financial assistance.

A rambling status update was posted on Micah Allison's Facebook account Thursday complaining that she and her long-time partner, Derick Almena, have been unable to withdraw money that has been donated to various online fundraisers that were supposed to benefit her family.

This seems to have been missed at the time.

If you think about it, the reaction of the owners (and rent-collectors) of the Ghost Ship are pretty much exactly what one gets from Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton whenever something goes wrong on their watch.

An immediate search for excuses, scapegoating their culpability on someone else, and whining about how mistreated they are.

______________

And an appeal for someone else to support them.

Well, legal and zoning issues aside, didn’t they own that property? Did they collect an insurance settlement? can they not collect on insurance because of their illegally running an apartment/artist colony residence place???
\

Even if insurance and lawsuits are headaches for them, can’t they sell; doesn’t the property have some residual value?

“Stigma?” All 330 million people in this country are familiar with the incident? Really?

The Ghost Ship is a metaphor for what Obama did to this country...

They should be in jail/ And if they do own the property it should be sold and the proceeds distributed to the families of the deceased.

Why should they get any money for running an illegal fire trap that caused the deaths of three dozen people??? They should be in jail.

They justify their behavior by claiming they are “helping” those who have little other options. The city knew about this and did nothing.. these two collected rents and were basically slum lords of the worst kind.

People died due to the negligence... while I do have sympathy for any human suffering, you cannot absolve yourselves of your own culpability in this.

How can you complain you are being scapegoated when you were happily engaging in illegal activities that cost people their lives? I know rents in that area are insane... so it’s not hard to see people would take something over nothing... but that doesn’t mean you have no culpability for your part in it.

I have a friend who had her niece died in a similar situation, when an abandoned warehouse that was being squatted in caught fire in NO, not all that long ago. In that case there was ok on charging rents, just folks squatting where they should not have been...

City of Oakland was negligent, State of Ca was complicit.
The plaintiffs were dopers.

Have you seen some of the pictures posted online of this place before it burned. They say warehouse, I say crackhouse. They don’t need money, they need jail.

Why have they not been charged with murder, negligent or otherwise?

No, they didn’t own it, they didn’t collect insurance, they could have tens of millions of wrongful death lawsuits just waiting to pile up on them if they haven’t been filed already.

The property, I believe, was owned by an Asian fellow or his company or family. I am not sure whether a concrete building in which a serious fire burned can be saved. Fire or not, it likely cannot be economically be brought up to 2017 building and especially seismic codes and it would probably have to be, to “re-earn” any kind of certificate of occupancy or the industrial equivalent. And it’s in a fairly ratty section of town, so the idea of rehabbing it at high cost just to be another 5K sq foot warehouse (where there are perhaps dozens already available for lease) may very well not make any sense at all.

The value of that building today is likely to be the value of the land minus about $75K-$100K in demolition to break it up and remove the debris.

I’m not claiming to be an expert, but I *do* live in the area, with *some* commercial RE experience.
