Exit, the Switzerland-based organization that helps those with incurable illnesses to end their lives, has commissioned a working group to look into the possibility of extending its remit to help elderly people who are still in good health but want to die.

On Saturday Saskia Frei, president of the German-speaking arm of the organization, announced it would fund a working group to look into extending Exit’s services to healthy elderly people who wish to die, reported news agencies.

Over the course of a year the commission will examine the ethical, legal and political issues surrounding extending assisted suicide to healthy people.

When the report is concluded Exit will decide if it should take steps in that direction. …

One always has the right to die regardless of government edict.

We are all going to die. There is no right to self-murder, assisted or otherwise.

Are not humans the ultimate owners of their own lives?

No. And none of the Founding Fathers would say so. All life belongs to God.

Even ancient Greek pagans understood suicide to be a sin. Socrates, in ‘Phaedo’, says ‘any man who has the spirit of philosophy, will be willing to die; but he will not take his own life, for that is held to be unlawful’, because the gods ‘are the best of rulers’, and humans are owned by them.

Likewise, in the Jewish formulation of the Seven Laws of the Children of Noah, suicide is merely a type of prohibited murder.

The most evil people in this world do not shoot up schools and malls or drive cars into crowds if people. No. They go to University and then sit in conference rooms at NGOs.

whether sinful in the eye of God or declared unlawful by some state or authority, the choice to terminate one’s life still remains that of the individual.

That is true; you can certainly choose to do it.

Living in an era where so many are choosing evil, I will certainly be circumspect in my choices. Deuteronomy 30:15-19 exhorts me to choose life.
