You start with a refurbished older Xeon workstation. withe the proper motherboard.
Then the Xeon e5 2660/ somewhere like eBay
http://www.ebay.com/bhp/intel-xeon-e5-2660
Intel SR0KK Xeon CPU E5-2660 2.2GHz 8-core 20Mb 95W Processor zj
$55.00
Bflr
From the pristine shores of lake Minnetonka.
The Poor Man’s Workstation - buy a Xeon Core Workstation, add this $60 5 year old 8 core powerhouse CPU, throw in a decent GPU and plenty of memory and you’ve got a high-end workstation for around $400!
A top of the line workstation retails for something like $10,000 so this is pretty cool.
Sandy Bridge definitely still has life in it.
Ping for later ,, I have a 4core “W” xeon WS ,,, gotta see if this upgrade works for me..
I think the new AMD threadripper workstation with 16 cores and 32 threads is gong to drop that 10k Workstation price by at least half.
