New York City's suburban commuters are bracing for the start next week of what has been called the 'summer of hell' as the United States' busiest train hub partly shuts down for extensive track repairs. The work at Pennsylvania Station is due to begin Monday and run through Sept. 1, leaving the roughly 600,000 commuters who arrive there each morning from New Jersey and Long Island scrambling for alternate ways into the city.

No sympathy whatsoever. Voters insist on having a blatant hardcore commie anarchist as Mayor, a city council that is so far left that they held an "Ethel Rosenberg day" celebrating her for "great bravery" - something they never did for cops killed in the line of duty - and a corrupt rat as Governor.

I am sure many of these 600,000 commuters will not mind seeing how comrade Bill is on top of the climate change crisis

And just so you non-NYers know, we who live near, but not in NYC, have been paying to support this wonderful transportation system for years now. To get from my home in NJ to where I grew up on Long Island I pay $17 round-trip in tolls for one stinking bridge. (The Throgs Neck Bridge. I also use the George Washington Bridge which is $15 RT, but that money goes for other boondoggles like building the WTC, and this thread is about the trains.) When this bridge was opened in 1961, they charged a quarter each way to pay off the bonds that were issued to pay for the bridge.

These bonds were long ago paid off. The bridge is now a cash-cow that supports the "Metropolitan Transportation Authority," which somehow took over the bridges under Mayor John Lindsey so he wouldn't have to raise the cost of a subway token again. But probably most of the money has been diverted into the hands of the politicians who live in more and bigger McMansions. It certainly hasn't helped the motorists who use the bridges.

A number of cities like to “close off” access for those who live nearby but want to work or visit “in the city”.

In Houston, those who live outside of The Loop are still taxed to support all of that infrastructure “in the city” but they are actively discouraged from venturing in by a hostile city council (and mayoral candidates).

But that “Loop” is bisected by an interstate highway that stretches from California to Florida. And those on the city council scoff at doing anything to permit more east bound traffic getting “inside” the loop (even though plenty of shipping trucks aren’t stopping in the city).

If they are making you pay $17 in tolls, it’s out of spite.

Off topic - none of whom you mention has ANYTHING to do with running Amtrak, and it is Amtrak that owns and operates Penn Station. The problems in Penn Station are not the problem of them MTA, or the governments of NY State or New York City.

Cuomo should take a tip from the late Gov. Rockefeller (R-NY)

Wait a bit and then just proclaim Penn Station the BEST STATION in the world.......and, voila.
