A Massachusetts woman who encouraged her boyfriend to kill himself in dozens of text messages was sentenced to 2-1/2 years in jail on Thursday.
Juvenile Court Judge Lawrence Moniz said Michelle Carter only has to serve 15 months. He also sentenced her to five years of probation.
Carter was 17 when the 18-year-old Conrad Roy was found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in July of 2014.
She urged Roy to follow through on his suicide talk, including telling him on the day he died: "The time is right and you are ready ... just do it babe."
"You can't think about it. You just have to do it. You said you were gonna do it. Like I don't get why you aren't," Carter wrote in another text.
Roy was found dead in his pickup truck in a parking lot near Boston.
"Miss Carter will have to live with the consequences of this for the rest of her life," defense lawyer Joseph Cataldo said in court Thursday. "This was a horrible circumstance that she completely regrets."

I don't know what to think about it but there is plenty of blame to go around.
He should have killed her first.
Is there really?
Normally, I'd just blame the kid who killed himself but in today's society, it's always someone else's fault.
I had a friend in college like this. She hijacked pretty much every conversation to bring it back to her depression, her suicidal thoughts, her, her, her... we would lay awake at night talking about her. Her problems. Her feelings. Her past. Her depression. I got very little sleep. And at first I was very sympathetic. By the end of the year, I was ready to hand her a razor blade. I had to get away from her.
So she’ll be out of jail before age 20, presumably to enjoy living her life for decades and decades?
Hardly seems fair and just, for what she did.
I read another more lengthy article about this and to hear the boy’s family you would think this girl was the spawn of the devil. The family ought to realize that they should shoulder some blame themselves. Their boy was an accident waiting to happen.
I got the same impression you did.
We need texting control to go with gun control and thought control.
He was messed up. She was messed up. In a year or two, she will get out and be even more messed up after prison and fame for being so cold. The eyes and even the eyebrows worry me. I expect the cold and crazy eyes, but what made her think she needed to do whatever she did to get those fake eyebrows?
As did I.
What is missed is that she was in contact with him when he began to commit suicide to the end. she made no effort to notify emergency authorities to stop/save him. This is more than just encouraging him. at that point it was aiding and abetting after a fashion.
I agree with that lawyer. I bet that the verdict will likely get shot down on appeal. And I'm not saying that what she did was a good thing, just not manslaughter.
She should have become a shrink. Then she could get paid to do the same thing.
Female sentencing discount
Best reply yet. I take it you have had some experiences with shrinks as I have.
They murdered my best friend from High School with major tranquillizers and ECT. The entire profession is corrupt and e1vil.
Some have suggested that he was a high maintenance, manipulative, possessive creep who was harassing and e-stalking this poor girl and worse.
The very fact he offed himself tells us that he was mentally sick.
Can you not see her POV?
I also suspect he didn’t intend to die. He may have been trying to get her to do or say something, or to come running... to convince her he was serious and she’d better do this or that... I think there’s a very good possibility that he played chicken and lost.
Encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide.
So, how is that much different from assisted suicides and third trimester abortions (or any abortions at all)?
She could easily serve on the democrats’s Obamacare death panels.
Apparently assisted suicide is now involuntary manslaughter. Somebody should tell the people in states that permit it that they are all committing crimes.
