An Alternate Viewpoint: Was DPRK Announcement Of A Possible Guam-Area Strike A Very Smart Move?
Strac6

The Norks announcement of a Guam-area nuclear strike might not be a foolish, or even un-reasoned move on their part. Stop and think for a moment, and then game it.

Remember, they did not say "Guam", as in that specific island with multiple US bases. It's been missed in many stories, but the DPRK's NCNA specifically said "near Guam"

For example, this is from the BBC story: "North Korea says it is considering missile strikes NEAR the US Pacific territory of Guam, just hours after President Donald Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury".

More: "The North's official news agency said it was mulling a plan to fire medium-to-long-range rockets AROUND Guam, where US strategic bombers are based."

So the Norks send an old ship into international waters in the middle of nowhere, 1000 +/- miles ENE of Guam. Then they evacuate the crew. Or perhaps they just announce the latitude - longitude of a target in that area.

Kim then launches a nuc-tipped missile toward it, and announces at the launch that the ship or the geographic coordinates are the target. They also announce DPRK has 25 other missiles ready to go. (DIA now admits DPRK may have as many as 60 nuc warheads.)

Bomb goes bang... a big bang. If they miss by 100 miles, who cares? If they aimed for Chicago and hit Milwaukee, that's still a BIG problem. In this case, no one dies with the possible exception of a few lost sailors, which no one will ever know about.

Norks then announce that if any “aggressive actions” are taken against it, they will “launch on provocation.” Space Command informs JCS and POTUS that Norks can launch before US missiles can take out launchers, and locations of launchers is generally unknown because Norks are now using TELs.

Our ABMs can be expected to only take out only 50% of the Norks missiles, at the most.

Now what the F do we do?

I know it's far-fetched. So was Entebbe, the Egyptian start of the '73 war, Normandy (not Pas de Calais as expected), Operation Barbarossa, Fort Eben-Emael, and so many other military actions.

I know it's far fetched.

Think about it.... and your reasoned thoughts, please.

I bought a small expensive box of Captain Crunch from our local CVS.

My wife, after giving me grief for making such a stupid purchase devoured it along with my son.

There is a LARGE box of Captain Crunch in the pantry now.

It would be the same as poking a tiger with a sharp stick.

It would be crazy and suicidal.

“There is a LARGE box of Captain Crunch in the pantry now.”

I thought Captain Crunch was accused of being a cereal killer.

Near Guam? Hey, I’ve never liked Saipan anyway.

What you do is you tell China behind the scenes, that if the Norks attempts anything near this we will be going after them — the Chinese of whom likely gave the Norks the tech.

It is a MAD world.

If they launch a missile in the direction of Guam then we take it down. We need to goad them into doing something stupid so that we have an excuse to level them.

“Now what the F do we do?”

So they kill half the population of the USA. We kill the entire nation of North Korea and a bunch of Chinese and South Koreans in the cross-fire. “Sorry guys, those wankers were in your neighborhood. You should have done something.”

Let’s finish this war.

I thought about that, but we do not have the military ability to do so. Guam is out of range of Alaska and California AMBs, and the ship based ones work about 50% of the time.

Oh, sheet!

I myself found this announcement of a so-called plan to strike Guam very very strangem i’m not prepared to give you an assessment but it seems very odd.... it seems like it is a test of American reaction.

"Our ABMs can be expected to only take out only 50% of the Norks missiles, at the most."

If I were NORK, I may not confident the missiles would get there even without the ABMs. NORK might not get a second chance to do it right.

Use the ship based ones. If they don’t work then we need to know that.

Then launch two ship-based missiles.

In the industry it’s called “shoot-look-shoot” or “salvo”.

What if the Norks are trying to goad us into some sort of pre-emptive attack which they can use as a provocation to launch a multi prong attack on SK, Japan, Hawaii and/or the west coast. Yes it would be suicide, but that is assuming that Kim is not insane. I would assert that this kid has been taught since he was a baby that NK defeated the US in 1953 and sent the capitalist yellow dogs running and that they can easily do it again. We think that is crazy, but he probably doesn’t.
