Man Gets Drunk, Sells Car, Forgets, Reports it Stolen ($579 - To Buy More Booze)

A man who sold his car while drunk forgot he had made the deal and called the cops to report his vehicle stolen. The Telegraph reports on the story involving a man in New Zealand who sold his car for $800NZD (€495) so he could get more money to keep his boozy night out going.

However, the next day he had no memory of selling the car and reported it stolen to the police in Rotorua.

The man who purchased the motor from a car-selling site was also suspicious the car might be stolen so he checked the registration and an alert placed on it by the police came up.

The Telegraph quotes what Sergeant Dennis Murphy told the NZ Herald: “The man came into the station with the car to let us know what had happened. We were able to get in touch with the original owner and told them to sort it out between them.

“The lesson here is don't drink and sell cars.

Isn't it basic contract law, that both parties need to be lucid and sober to create a valid transaction?

A friend of mine was working selling computers etc. at one time, and a man that was plastered came in and bought a lot of expensive equipment. He sent someone else in the next day to return it all.

I always wondered how that “Girls Gone Wild” guy got away with it. His whole model was based on taking advantage of inebriated people. How could any of the releases signed by these women be valid, when they were intoxicated?

In his worst days David Crosby once traded a car to a drug dealer. The drug dealer OD’d & died, Crosby snuck in the house, ripped up the receipt, and took the car back.

When working at Domino’s a few years ago, my daughter had a guy offer her a baggie of pot in exchange for a pizza. He waited around for her to “make” it.

Then, out of the blue, in walk the police.

Turns out it was even fake pot.

OTOH, If a guy gets this drunk often, he is doing his fellow citizens a favor by selling the car.

Some would argue Domino’s is fake pizza.

it’s called filing a false report.

I mean the car sale itself. As far as filing a false police report, I'm not sure they will charge him. He apparently didn't file the false police report knowingly, he actually thought it was stolen. Not sure he has the mens rea for it to be a crime.

Well, I didn’t want to insult his daughter, who is probably upstanding and a hard worker.

I’ve been to Rotorua. If you like the smell of sulfur, that’s the place to be, with all their geothermal pools.

The Comey definition - he didn't intend to file a false report... ;-)
