Rugulach are soft and quite small. I think kolaches are crispy? (Covered in powdered sugar?) My husband likes chocolate ones and I prefer the cinnamon ones.

The brown bread is traditional in Ireland and England. I’ve had smoked salmon at Fortnum and Mason’s (when they had the tearoom) and it’s served on delicious brown bread and fresh butter.

“What would you break a fast with?”.........

Most people would eat what ever they could get their hands on (or the leftovers from the snacks they consumed during their “fast”. On the other hand, there are those who WILL stick to fasting and I applaud them. Hope you enjoy the “first meal”

They look yummy remind me of my Polish kolachkes. My Mom made the best ones. As far as fasts go I like a nice bowl of homemade soup afterwards.

After a prolonged fast, the thing to think about is not stuff you prefer to eat but the best thing to restart your GI system.

Break a fast very cautiously.

Absolutely no cheese or other protein....there's no roughage in these foods.

They will bind you......you don't want to encourage that problem.

I am so sorry you are feeling so poorly. I’m surprised your family isn’t worried enough about your lack of eating that they wouldn’t make those muffins for you! Whatever sounds good, you should get! Hope they make them this weekend.

I think that the body craving protein means “heavy” food. The system is empty and ready to go.

I bet. And a cheeseburger is full of protein. I remember traveling around the world as a student and getting back to the USA with my 500 other traveling student companions, and a very wealthy boy’s parents purchased McDonalds for the entire group. And how good it tasted at the time after lots of rice and water buffalo and such. Wouldn’t eat MacD’s now but at the time, yum.

Very cool, saving that recipe. Since I can’t do bagels or store brought bread, and never was successful trying to make my own sourdough (still on my bucket list to learn properly), I have put lox and cream cheese on those boring pure rye crackers. It’s not the gluten that bothers me, it’s the cheap loser enriched American wheat flour. But the crunch under the gooey cheese and fish, yum. And the capers (I lived in europe too long, MUST have capers with it) go on the spread cream cheese UNDER the smoked salmon so they don’t fall off, see? Lol.

You bring up a good point. Part 1) I do think a little protein. Not a cheeseburger, maybe, but some simple animal or even veg protein. Then don’t forget part 2) Something starchy and fibrous for the gut bugs to be happy (they were as miserable as you were, not eating), and then digestion will be easy.

The year I did pure Atkins, I ended it at the Break Fast after Yom Kippur. On Atkins, I was doing very poorly without the proper carbs. I had started bruising all over, each time I gently bumped my arm on a table, something you barely feel, a dark bruise would form. I fasted for YK, but at the family party afterward, I was craving carbs more than anything in the world. I started eating a few bites and just went wild and felt sooooo good. Boom, done with Atkins. The bruising stopped.

Now I know the gut bugs are important to our immune system and we need to feed them too. Even my protein shakes now, I add flax seed, or inulin, or chia, etc. Once you learn they actually affect your MOODS when they are happy, you just feed them daily like feeding your pet!

They sound very gooey and scrumptious. I don’t do mocha but the rest of the recipe has different ingredients too, so I’d like to make those and see how the family enjoys them. Hope you eat something good today.

On Rosh Hashana, the traditional challah bread, the one that is soft and shaped like a braid, is made round, and sometimes sweeter (or raisins added). Sweetness, and a good, sweet new year, is the deal here, I think. Another favorite is tzimmes, which is carrots sliced into coin shapes, cooked with a fat and some dried fruit of your choice, so they are extra sweet, and of course the symbol there is parnassas, or “earning a living.” Having a successful new year. The big dessert for Rosh Hashana and the ONLY thing little kids even remember about the holiday, is dipping apple slices into honey. That is a must.

Thank you Yaelle.
I like the idea of a crust on a brownie and haven’t used sweetened condensed milk in a brownie recipe, so it sounds different and good. My favorite brownies for the last few years have been mixed with various cookie dough.

Since it non-yeast you can slice it really thin.

“MUST have capers with it” Lol! Agree!
