“In 1971, the year that we set the beginning of The Deuce, I was 11 years old,” co-creator David Simon recalled. At 17, he spent the summer in New York while working at an uncle’s warehouse: “I can tell you that, while the city felt electric and volatile and amazing and, from its debauchery to its culture, it felt like an incredible place, it was also dangerous as hell.”

New York in the 70’s especially places like Times Square were like an open sewer. Places in Brooklyn and Queens looked like they were part of saturation bombing of WWII. All efforts by the politicians controlling the city failed until Rudy Giuliani was elected.

I lived in Crown Heights 1972-76.

When I heard DeBlasio got elected, I wanted to go into business printing “No Radio” signs.

The first time I took my wife to see NYC (~1973) we drove through TS.
Her first reaction - why are so many women standing in doorways, it's not raining?

I remember driving through new York city in the early eighties and you had miles of old brownstones that were husks of buildings. it looked as if civilization had ended.

To this day it pains liberals to give Giuliani any credit. The article credits Dinkins and Vallone for increasing funding for the cops but the reality was that Dinkins was one of the worst mayors in history of the USA.

The city was better off back in the Bronson “Death Wish” days than the smoke free, sugar free, gun free and anything else Bloomberg/DiBlowsio didn’t like free communist shithole it is today. New Yorkers love living freedom free.

This is a must-watch video in this context:

NY77: The Coolest Year In Hell

YouTube, Published on March 26, 2014

New York City, 1977 - It was a time when the city had fallen into decay, with too few jobs, money, police, schools, and social services. There was a city wide blackout with major looting, a serial killer on the loose, and the Bronx was burning. And yet out of the chaos emerged one of the most creative times any city has ever encountered.

I can only imagine the expression on you face when she asked that question. What was your answer? Did you answer with a straight face?

Nothing really - since she had never been in NYC I was expecting it.

John Lindsay was an early version of Bill “DeBlasio”.

Oh yes, I remember John Lindsay well. Especially the Transit strike that ensued and the snow storm snafu.
