Only Fools and Horses Actor Lennard Pearce 'Had the Chance to Kill Hitler'
The Telegraph ^

His Only Fools and Horses character might have tried to avoid the war, but in real life actor Lennard Pearce once came face to face with Adolf Hitler, according to his co-star Nicholas Lyndhurst.

Lyndhurst, who played dim Rodney in the classic BBC sitcom, has said that his on-screen grandad met the German dictator before the war, and later regretted not taking the opportunity to kill him.

“He was a young actor touring Europe and they were playing some German city and the Nazis walked in," Lyndhurst said.

"The top honchos of the Nazi party had seen the play and came to congratulate them afterwards. Lennard shook hands with Adolf Hitler. He only ever told me once, but he said, ‘Had I known then what I know now, I would have drawn the pistol from one of the bodyguards and I’d have done my best to kill him.’”

‘Had I known then what I know now, I would have drawn the pistol from one of the bodyguards and I’d have done my best to kill him.’”

Very low chance of success.

SS guards typically had flap holsters. It would be very hard to get the flap up and withdraw the pistol of a guard while he is resisting and his fellows are grabbing you.

A better idea would be to use a sharp object like a pen to stab Hitler in the neck or temple. I would try to stab him in the neck behind the jugular vein and pulling back rip the jugular open.

You would likely instantly lose your life. But if it is what you wanted to do try to do the unexpected and something difficult to prevent.

I get he’s trying to sound cool in hindsight, but get real. He would have failed, and then been thrown in jail.

If he had killed Hitler, someone more competent might've taken over.

People always forget this.

Speer in his memoir describes the one time his father met Hitler. He became visibly ill. Prior to the War, Speer’s father who was a very successful architect without the political connections and government jobs, thought the Hitler-Speer vision of Berlin as Germania, Welthauptstadt, was insane.

If you could go back in time and take out one leader....who would it be?

Second...would you do it?

Most of the WW2-vintage German holsters I’ve seen, in addition to the flap, have a pull string — the pistol hits deep in the holster and you pull the cord to make the pistol lift high enough to grab. Quick for the guy wearing the holster but a difficult angle for anyone else teying to extract the gun.

He actually had no chance at all to kill Hitler.

20/20 hindsight - useless.
Only a few visionaries, like Churchill, knew what Hitler was early on.
The rest of the world was pretty enamored with him (and Mussolini) up until about 1938 or so.

Analytically to save the most lives you would want to kill Mao.

But historically if you went back in time and killed Marx himself you might save many many more. But that would not be a leader.

Killing an idea might be a better idea.

Lennard shook hands with Adolf Hitler. He only ever told me once, but he said, ‘Had I known then what I know now, I would have drawn the pistol from one of the bodyguards and I’d have done my best to kill him.’”

Likely outcome: Hitler dies, Ernst Thalmann becomes the German leader, Germany, the USSR, and Mao form an alliance to make the world Stalinist, and from there the least-bad outcome would have been the US, Britain, and Japan (and maybe Mussolini) forming an anti-communist alliance, with the US giving Japan a pass on its mass murdering military, just as we gave Stalin a pass in order to get rid of Hitler.

The Hitler we know might could have been avoided if he had been accepted into the art school to which he applied. ...

... if we are looking backwards ... (audible sigh) ...

Great minds think alike. We were having this “who would you go back and kill” conversation at a little get together with friends and drinking buddies recently. I said Marx and Engalls. That got some raised eyebrows from some of my more liberal associates to say the least.

I said Marx and Engalls.

That should be Ingalls not Engalls. You dislike Little House on the Prairie that much?

I checked it and everything I see says Engels so I still misspelled it. Not denigrating the Ingalls of Walnut Grove at all. The books and that TV show are some of my favorite childhood memories.

Yes, I figured you meant Frederick Engels, co-author of The Communist Manifesto.

And you probably meant Karl rather than Groucho, Chico, Harpo, Gummo or Zeppo.
