The CEO of Germanys Lufthansa has said the company would be interested in buying Italys troubled flagship carrier if an opportunity arose to to create a new Alitalia.
His comments come just days before an October 16th deadline for the submission of bids.
Ryanair pulled out of the running earlier this month as it deals with a shortage of pilots that forced it to cancel thousands of flights.
Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr told German media on Thursday: Alitalia as it exists today is not up for debate. But if there was a chance of creating a new Alitalia, then as Europes No. 1 [carrier], Lufthansa would certainly be interested in the talks. Italy is an important market for us.

And then they’ll go after the Japanese airline.
I have a catchy name for that conglomerate — Axis Airlines.
And a slogan:
“When you’ve got travel problems, the Axis conquers them!”
I don’t know about buying a Japanese airline.
The Germans did not get what they hoped for with an alliance with Japan. The Germans hoped Japan would invade the USSR from the east but that did not happen. Hitler was disappointed.

And they drew Germany into a war with the U.S.
Sucks to be Hitler.
I think Hitler believed with the signing of a treaty with Japan, Japan would invade Russia. But it did draw Germany into war with the US. Russia had a master spy in Japan,
Sorge, I think his name was. He had access to high level government officials and relayed to Stalin that Japan would not invade the USSR. Of course at the end of the war, the USSR invaded Japan.
Alitalia is one of the worst airlines. Theyre always trying to go on strike.
