Afraid they'll lose their jobs, Tulsa teachers are enduring attacks from kindergartners, pre-K students

Tulsa Public Schools teachers across the district are enduring attacks from prekindergarten and kindergarten students, the head of the Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association told the school board on Monday.

With about a dozen teachers standing behind her, Patti Ferguson-Palmer, president of TCTA, said that when it comes to what to do about the attacks, teachers and administrators are “frozen into inaction for fear of losing their jobs.”

Ferguson-Palmer said she has observed classroom attacks and that, in some cases, teachers are afraid to have students use pencils and scissors in activities for fear that they will be used as weapons.

She said teachers are worried about losing their jobs if they block an unruly child from leaving the classroom or if they let a child leave the classroom, meaning they’re stymied whatever they do.

The attacks are often due to a child’s reacting to external stresses, which triggers a fight or flight response, Ferguson-Palmer said.

The TCTA wants to work with the district to alleviate the situation and appreciates the efforts the district has made thus far, she said.

Ebony Johnson, executive director of student and family support services for the district, said there’s a difference between a kindergarten or prekindergarten student throwing a chair and an older student doing the same thing.

“Both behaviors are inappropriate. It is not OK,” said Johnson. “But a pre-K student struggles with impulsivity. They struggle with managing their emotions.”

She said principals undergo training to deal with actions of students who have undergone trauma. The principals then train their teachers, she said.

“I know there are teachers who feel as though there needs to be more support,” said Johnson. She added that the district is working to gather more information and figure out where to bring in more support.

Can get pretty iffy when the grade schoolers are 15-16 and 180 lbs.

There are an endless number of things wrong with schools.

But a strong contributing factor to some of this stuff is the fact that many parents simply do not raise their children. No discipline. No rules. No expectations. Hey, the teachers will do all that work, right?

Well, if the teachers do any of that stuff, they are likely to be fired. And also attacked by the parents.

It’s a hopeless situation.

The school needs to call babymama and tell her if the child cannot act right, she is going to have to find another place to babysit her child.

Wow...thuggish teen behavior now all the way down to K and Pre-K? That's unbelievable.

Funny the article doesn't talk about the specific schools with the problem, where they are located, and the demographics.

The answer is probably to be found in the maps found here. Scroll down to the section "Map of Race and Ethnicity by Tract in Tulsa" and click around.

Might I suggest applying the board of education to the seat of knowledge?

This sounds like a new policy adopted by the pinheads. It is probably similar to the “edgy” decision not to suspend students in the LAUSD. It is also fairly likely that Ebony is not Ivory.

Do that and you go to jail.

Mr Razzman, Cayuga Heights Elementary, 4th Grade, 1960. One bad word and POW!! Piece of chalk smack on the side of your head thrown as hard as a fastball from the front of the room. You didn’t act up much in Mr. Razzman’s room.

Times have changed.

LOL. Quite surprising, too. This is the new normal in big liberal cities all over the country. You simply cannot discipline the little darlings.

But Tulsa, OK? I didn’t know the liberal pathologies had burrowed that deep into the heartland.

Too many teachers and administrators from all over the country go to the same conferences where the newest fads are taught. “Restorative Justice” is the big thing now. Essentially means zero discipline in schools. This is the end result.

What happened to the bench outside the principal’s office — for disruptive students?

Well, we raised hell when ‘they’ were putting the 30 year olds who had convinced the BO admin they were 15, in with 15 year olds not knowing a word of English.

Gets pretty bad when the Kgartners are older than the Teachers & their Aides....

When I was in sixth grade elementary school both of the sith grade classes were combined due to building construction so we had two teachers, both male.

There was a 14 year old kid who had just moved into the new low-cost housing about a mile away and he had been held back three times due to grade and disciplinary problems. For some reason which I forget now the kid escalated some type of argument with one of the teachers and actually tried to attack the teacher. Mr Schumaker grabbed the kid by the throat and slammed him against a wall then pinned his arms behind his back, marched him to the office and we never saw the kid again.

The next year in seventh grade Junior High I saw the same kid on the first day of school. It seems that the kid turned 14 and by regulations had to be promoted to seventh grade. Anyway, that kid got into some kind of big trouble with the Vice Principle about two weeks in and we never saw him again in the three years of Junior High.

We need to go back to the days where teachers can use real discipline to keep the heathens in check.

Can’t...
The schools get penalized if they boot too many troublemakers, not to mention sued.

The teachers union support democrats. Democrats support lawyers. Lawyers have created an environment where teachers cannot function. They’ve got no one else to blame if they voted democrat.
