The woman who can’t forget (Some people can remember every single event in their life)
BBC ^ | 11/08/2017 | Sarah Keating

---SNIP--- Considering most people’s earliest memories don’t start until around the age of four, it would be easy to assume that Sharrock’s description was a nostalgic daydream, rather than a real memory. But then again, the 27-year-old from Brisbane, Australia doesn’t have a memory like most people – she has been diagnosed with a rare syndrome called ‘Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory’, or HSAM, also known as hyperthymesia. This unique neurological condition means that Sharrock can recall every single thing she did on any given date.

Not to be confused with Hillary Clinton, who can’t recall anything.

it may be a scourge to some of those who experience it.

I can attest to that, I remember almost everything I have ever seen, heard, or done. It truly is a Curse but it can be fun sometimes. The biggest problem I have is keeping my fat mouth closed when I remember all the little details about an event. It can really get you in trouble for remembering.

If you said, did, thought of, was accused of, leaned in the direction of.....

...Saying or doing something even slightly questionable.....oh let’s say 40+ years ago..... your wife WILL remind you of it.....in no uncertain terms at most inappropriate times. It’s their job, I suppose.

They just put in a storage place in the mind to be recalled at a later date when it is necessary to win an argument.

I think it’s fascinating because the rest of us all wonder whether we have recorded memories of everything but for some reason can’t access them. I do understand how it would feel like a curse to have the full blown condition though.

If you’re a race fan, you’ll know of Donald Davidson. He can recite the finishing order of every Indy 500 since his first in 1964. His memory is unbelievable. Has to be a similar condition.

There is plenty in my life that I am glad to forget!

Actually, I do have rather detailed and often obsessive memory compared to most people. Friends often marvel at all the details I recall effortlessly from across the past 50+ yrs. Fortunately, I do not remember everything!

The actress Marilu Henner has this. She can be asked about Oct 2, 1982 for example, and she can give every detail; even what she was wearing. Weird.

We can’t bust heads like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to tell ‘em stories that don’t go anywhere - like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. “Give me five bees for a quarter,” you’d say.

Now where were we? Oh yeah: the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...
