Microsoft Outlook (General Computer Question)

Posted on 11/17/2017 3:36:44 AM PST by ducttape45

I have a general software query I'm hoping someone can help me with. I'm trying to find, if something even exists, a plugin or add-in for Microsoft Outlook that I can use that can give me a "File Explorer" -ish look and feel to the program. I have lots of emails I'm trying to go through and if I had something that made navigating the thousands of emails I got more easily it would make my job a lot more pleasant.

And please, this is a serious request, so no snarky remarks about using other programs and no Microsoft haters. I don't like using it anymore than many of you others but it's what I'm stuck with.

I'll check back during the day for your suggestions. Thank you.

Is the search function not to your liking?

By search function, I mean the search function in Outlook which will find addressees and words in the body of messages. After you find the item you’re looking for, create a file for like messages. I do it by client/project/general subject.

Organize your mail into folders? You do not need a plugin for that.

Those features are already built into Outlook. I am not an Microsoft fan, but changing settings on views, rearing subfolders, and setting rules can get the look you describe.

Not enough info in your post to understand what you’re trying to do, but I’m not aware of such a plug-in. HOWEVER, Outlook has some native functionality you might try.

1. You can create your own folders and sub-folders to keep email items organized. So, if you’re looking for a better method of finding emails already received (rather than just searches), you can move them to an appropriate folder for easy retrieval later. The “view” in the left-pane of your open Outlook window has the class file tree-structure look to it.

2. You can apply “rules” to inbound emails, so they’re automatically sorted and placed in to appropriate folders (as created above), rather than just dumping them into the “Inbox”. You can do this by common fields, like who sent you the email, by presence of certain keywords in the subject line or body, and more.

If you can post up with a bit more detail, maybe I and others can offer some more specifics.

You have lots of options, but you may find that a different email client such as Thunderbird may end up being more useful.

Since only you will know what is truly helpful, start with the Microsoft Store and see if there is something for sale that will help.

One of the better ideas was to move everything to Gmail, and then learn to use that programs Search and sort functions.

And installing a desktop search tool that can read a ,pst or ,ost file can help.

Last time I used it, it was like most others - you can create folders/sub-folders to move/store mails by topic....

I haven't used outlook in centuries, but I DO remember I could create a folder with the name of a friend and every time that friend sent an e-mail, it went to his folder ..... very handy if, after some time, I come back to my e-mail and see three or four e-mails.

But the more important question is ...

Who uses e-mail anymore ?

I get receipts for purchases and missionary updates and stuff like that.

NO one e-mails me because they all use I phones and the damned things come in as a number and not a person and I have to save to file, open, copy, wipe my butt .... too much trouble just to say "HI"

Microsoft Outlook question ... PING!

You can find all the Windows Ping list threads with FR search: just search on keyword "windowspinglist".

Which version of Outlook are you using?

Some settings differ with version. If you're not sure, the "About" box (Help -> About) will tell you:

There never was a version "13" for some reason... :-)

I don’t know EXACTLY what you’re asking for, but I imagine that your current Outlook has too many words in the e-mail list, where you want just a list of e-mail titles and you can double-click to read the e-mails.

In the case of Outlook 2010, you need to click the View tab, then the Change View button, then choose the Compact setting.

In the case of older Outlook versions, you need to choose View from the menu, then choose the Reading Pane option and then finally Off to turn it off.

Forget having to look for info. This thing is smart instant and indexes all your files including emails. Think of it as a local google for your computer.

Not only can you create sub-folders you can create a rule that will move all the email from a certain address into that folder, and all future messages that arrive from that sender.

I know how to navigate Outlook pretty well. I've been using it for many years. What I'm looking for is something that will give it the look and feel of Windows/File Explorer.

I know the emails are stored in a .PST file, but I'm hoping that I find something that does more than just move/delete folders like Pandali Folder Master. I'm trying to find something that will also move/delete emails in much the same way. The search function doesn't allow a user to search for emails and then move/delete them like you can in a file explorer environment, and that's what I'm trying to find.
