Why One Star Trek: Discovery Star Doesn't Want Cameos From The Original Cast (Jason Isaacs / Lorca)
CinemaBlend ^ | November 22, 2017 | Mick Joest

While there are some Star Trek fans who would love to see William Shatner strut onto the U.S.S. Discovery, Jason [Isaacs] is not one of them. The actor, who plays Captain Lorca on Star Trek: Discovery, flat out said he doesn't want appearances from the original cast on the series, and that he's not a fan of "stunt celebrity casting." [Isaacs] explained his reasoning and expressed that he felt doing something like that might hurt the fans' suspension of disbelief:

"Someone asked which cast members from the existing series would you like to guest star -- I think people watch good drama shows and they completely suspend their disbelief, they feel like they're looking through the keyhole at another world, if you do it well enough. 'If you have stunt celebrity cameo casting, it completely pulls them out of it. They feel like they're watching a Saturday Night Live sketch."

They’d also upstage his and the casts shoddy acting.

“...I think people watch good drama shows and they completely suspend their disbelief, they feel like they’re looking through the keyhole at another world, if you do it well enough.”

I think only children can suspend their disbelief like that nowadays. The rest of us know we’re watching Liberals pretending to live in a future where liberalism actually works despite reality.

That and Shatner would upset their diversity quota cart.

Actually been enjoying “The Orville”. It has comedic elements, but entertaining sci-fi episodes and a good cast.

Oh! THAT guy. If he were an American I would assume a different motivation. Hes English so he might mean it. Some of them seem to think acting is actually serious work.

Since Star Trek: Discovery is set years before the original Star Trek, it wouldn’t make any sense for characters from Star Trek to show up on Discovery.

I’ve watched it (via a friend - I refuse to pay for it myself). The anti-Trump stuff was pure virtue signaling by the cast and the story hasn’t even gone there. Which doesn’t make it good by any stretch of the imagination. They’ve reworked the Klingons as religious zealots which is the least of this series’ problems. There’s several prominent gay relationships by several prominent flamers just so you KNOW they’re gay. The main character is a human raised by vulcans who’s so liberal that she performs a mutiny on a gut feel which could’ve easily been wrong, fails, gets court martialed but her guess was right so she’s praised by everyone for being a go-getter and gets put in charge of a super sekrit project for her individualistic thinking and that’s just the first 4 episodes.
It’s a sillly series which has nothing to do with science fiction (the spore drive is a stupid concept that only Timothy Leary could dream up) and even less to do with Star Trek.
My friend dropped his sucscription before the finale so I’m cut off too. It’s no loss.

One would have thought old Spock would never violate protocol and contact young Spock, too....

That movie pretty much did it for me for Star Trek.

My longest oldest childhood Trekker friend passed away several years ago, and when Shatner goes, I suspect I won’t even notice ST at all anymore.

He has a point. This show stand on its own right now. Best to just let it continue IMHO.

I had my doubts after the first two (back to back) episodes but it cleaned up nicely.

I saw a little bit of one of those after the show shows with the female Kingon (with the scarred face) actor being herself. She had one of those laughs no one likes but puts up with. Kinda like fingernails on the chalk board laughs.

Some actors seem to be better people in their character roles than in their own real life persona.

I agree that none of the original cast should appear on Star Trek: Discovery. I wouldn't want the original cast's reputation tarnished by appearing on that insult to the Star Trek franchise.

Time travel is routine on Sci-Fi shows and movies.

I actually watched past episode one, and found it to really be no more PC than all of the other ST series.

It’s perfectly watchable SciFi if people seriously look at TNG to have been a masterpiece in the ST universe, to be honest.
