Thanks for the clarification. I stared at the photo and saw the shoes but it looked like there were yellowed bones as well. Perhaps they were sandals?

And in other news... https://wikispooks.com/wiki/200_Years_Together ...is in English now.

The news of what was happening in the USSR, the attempted 1919 Communist revolution in Germany, the Communist revolution in Hungary, and that the early Soviet Checka was majority-Jewish, set the stage for the impression that Jewish Leftists were a threat to the German middle class, and assisted Hitler's rise.

I didn’t find them “unbelievably crass”. We are trained from being toddlers to smile when being photographed. Sometimes we just smile because of that training. I remember being photographed smiling while at my daughter’s wake. It was the worst day of my life. I simply smiled without thinking, out of rote training, because “that’s what you do when being photographed”.

Same reaction I had. It’s not like the tourists are giving the Nazi salute or something. Even the woman in front of the shoes... for all I know, she had just walked a mile and was stretching her leg at the moment the photo was snapped. Who knows?

Auschwitz contains everything it did originally except the bodies. It’s also open to the public for idiots to display their idiocy. Nearby there is a lake where the bottom is permanently grey from the human ashes dumped there. There is also a field the size of two football fields that covered with ash ten feet deep. If anyone takes a smiling selfie in front of those, I would consider it bordering on evil instead of just stupid.

Bet that last one in the oven has a come hither look and pouty lips. A visit to Auschwitz is a visit to an amusement park for some.

The setting is completely inappropriate, which makes it bad taste, but I don’t see them intentionally belittling the victims. And I’m tired of people pointing fingers with little evidence of guilty intent.

Thank you for perfectly illustrating the crude state of our world today, and how low our standards of common decency have sunk.

>>What is this obsession these idiots have with insisting every photo they take must include them?

It’s a multi-billion dollar industry.

Are you suggesting consumerism has a dark side?

I was there a few years ago, buses full of students, someone lecturing, and the students busy with their cell phones or MP3s listening to music. I think they would rather be at a mall. The picture in the background is the labor camp with the Arbeit Mach Frei sign, where they held the political prisoners and some Russians. Lots of photographs posted on the walls inside the buildings but it was a memorial, so there were no re-inactors (?sp?). Some of it was props, the gas chamber and crematorium were made to resemble a combination room. It was nothing like the movies, they were brick multilevel buildings. Go down the road about 2 miles and there is the Auschwitz you see in the movies, its called Berkinau with the famous railroad track going through the front gate. Its where Mengele was located. That is the “Death” camp with the wooden long horse stabled barracks. Most of it was worn down and decaying, but the Poles seem to be rebuilding the old barracks when we were there. There was a Jewish tour group there at the time, don’t remember seeing any high schools kids. We had been to Buchenwald, there were kids there also, and again, more interested in themselves. We are doomed to repeat history because only a few pay attention. We spent a month with our friends in Europe going from Verdun to the Ukraine looking at the sights and the castles, estates, battlefields, forts, bunkers and a couple of the camps. Kids will be kids, especially young teenagers, they don’t know what the outside world is like until they experience it directly. Horse to water scenario applies. We are doomed to repeat history. Just read the news.

If taking a selfie in front of thousands of shoes removed from children who were sprayed with acid until their flesh melted from their little bones doesn't offend you, then I am sorry.

Maybe the convenient facade of being "offended" has been propped up long enough - and we should muster the sanity and character required to apply logic and reason towards understanding how human nature was responsible for manufacturing the Nazis - and other horrific behavior:

An acquaintances family took a vacation to Europe. Their teen son wanted to “skateboard at Auschwitz” so he hauled his skateboard all the way through Europe for that purpose.

Perhaps the boy thought the supposed freedom and anti-authoritarian ethos of “skateboarding” would somehow exercise the evil of Auschwitz. That’s the best spin I could put on it. I doubt there was even that much moral cogitation though....

I asked the parents if they really thought that was appropriate, the thought hadn’t occurred to them....

My great uncle, a vet, said his unit went into these camps and the army sent in black soldiers to clean them up. It really messed him up. I suspect it was one of the things that eventually led to his suicide.

Again, thanks. Now knowing the things you posted causes me to change my opinion. I realize that the previous post which indicates that people are just ‘used’ to smiling in pictures - the pictures can be in bad taste to begin with.

I feel schooled today! :)

It’s probably a duck?

Korah was the Pharaoh’s treasurer when he and the other “fallen angels” revolted against Moses and lifted up the Golden Calf.

Num 26:10-11
10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah, whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign. 11 The line of Korah, however, did not die out...

All I am saying is that I think it’s people just acting stupid, not evil. Partly because modern PC society is mostly stupid.

These spoiled, uneducated, losers taking Selfies at Auschwitz, as shown in post #11, better pray to God that they never have to survive the horrors of WWII as did this woman and those who perished in the camps:

I can’t even imagine. My question would probably be “why couldn’t we have gotten here sooner”? But the Soviet camps could be just as bad, as well as the forced mass starvations, African genocides, and what’s going on in countries like North Korea right now. The world prefers to keep them out of sight and mind.

wow. didn’t learn about that in school either. Makes me wonder about our nation not doing anything in response unless it hurts us.
